I KNOW SOME FRIENDS WITH A BOSE IN A NON-MAXIMAS THAT CANNOT PLAY BURNED CD-RS.

Bose doesn't sound that good. The money saved by not getting it should be used for getting better aftermarket stuff.

There are a lot of factors involved...
HU OEM, Bose spec. for the HU, date (pre or post CD-R spec release), etc etc.

OK, HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT THIS PRE/POST CD-R RELEASE DATE?

I have a 1997 SE w/ Bose and I can play burned CDs on mine. I am going to be ripping it out and getting a better system within the end of the year.

First revision of the Orange Book Spec was released in 1988.
Part II which covers CDR's wasn't release til 1990. CDR's weren't widely available for the home user til mid 90's. Latest revision was sometime in 1998.

A couple of years back, CDR compatibility was left up to the discretion of the manufacturer.

If you need more info about cdr specs. search the internet for the Orange Book Standard, specifically part II.
