Was this ever done, adding a sub in the BOSE “cutout”?

Was this ever done, adding a sub in the BOSE “cutout”?

I have a none-BOSE system in a 5th gen and want to add a sub but do not want a box in the trunk. Even though my car is none-BOSE it has the “cutout” for the BOSE sub.
Did anybody install a sub were the BOSE sub goes? If so what kind of sub and size?

Thanks

8inch sub. You probably still have to trim the metal with some tin snips.

what are tin snips?

you definitely have to trim the basket as most subs have a basket that is too wide to allow them to mount

Trim the sub basket?? Why would he do that? Just cut the stock trim. Also tin snips are made to cut metal they come in left curve or right curve and straight. Very very worthwhile item.

Yea, don't cut anything on the sub itself. The Bose sub has a metal plate that covers that square hole in the rear deck. It has a circular cut out with bolt holes for the Bose sub. You have to find a spare metal plate (no Bose=no plate), then trim the circle and make the hole larger so the aftermarket sub fits.

They're like scissors, for metal.

OK, no need to gut any metal for an 8" sub. I used an 1/2" MDF ring, mounted that to the plate the Bose sub is on and then mounted the sub to the ring. You guys are making this too hard. If you want to go up to a 10" sub. Remove the stock plate the Bose sub is mounted on. Make a baffle out of 1/2" MDF and mount the baffle to the actual rear deck, then mount the sub to the baffle. Make sure the sub is designed to operate in an IB or free air installation.

That was going to be my second suggestion, I just realized that now. Much easier, and actually a better install because metal resonates much worse than MDF.

It looks like they got deleted. I will see if Kevin kept any. Also, PM SC2k1. I think he got a couple shots. He now has a DLS AO10 that replaced an ID8 and previoulsy a CDT CF8. Man I hope someone has those pics, it was nice.

Long long long ago I installed a Kicker FreeAir 8" sub in the rear deck where the bose sub was. I think it was a "F8c"

Anyways, in my case I didn't have to trim any metal...for the most part it just dropped right in. I didn't even have to take my rear deck out to install it.

But, I now have a 12" in a sealed box in the trunk if that tells you anything. I wasn't anywhere near satisfied with it. Perhaps if I made a better effort to seal the trunk...but I never went that far.
