Aftermarket HU + Metra 70-7551 = CRAP!

If anyone is considering "upgrading" your stock Bose system by replacing the headunit, DON'T! I used the Metra 70-7551 amplifier integration adapter and when I turned it on for the first time, it sounded horrible! So I figured I just needed to adjust the settings, but after fiddling with it for 10 minutes, the sound just didn't improve. At max volume, things got distorted, and there was absolutely no bass response. I threw in a CD for comparison and believe it or not, the stock Bose headunit sounded 10x better and louder.

I just finished packing the Alpine CDA-9857 up. I'm kinda disappointed because I really wanted to integrate my iPod, which was the whole reason I started this project. I hope Crutchfield doesn't mind I painted the install kit Titanium, ha!

Moral of the story: Replace all components or don't bother. Anything worth doing is worth doing right, I suppose.

I don't know anything about the Metra kit you referenced but I know lots of people on here have been satisfied using aftermarket head units with bose using the PAC ROEM-NIS2 (myself included). I didn't have any of the problems you experienced.

What a generalized statement.

Something must have been done wrong, because there are MANY users that have done exactly what you have done with positive results. In fact, it's been argued that replacing your Bose HU with aftermarket makes the rest of the Bose system sound better.

Hmm interesting. Ive been doing this for years and literally Several dozen Nissans with absolutely No issues whatsoever. Sounds like an installer error to me.

It's either you did something wrong or your HU is not capable of the right output. What is the output voltage of the HU? How did you wire up the rca's from the HU to the 70-7551?

Actually the output voltage shouldn't even matter. The bose only outputs like 1 volt anyways. Sounds like user error. My bose sounds GREAT with the aftermarket HU.

Thanks for all the comments, but it definitely was NOT installer error. The important connections (the line-level rca preouts) are already done for you. The only ones left were power +/-, illumination, power antenna, and remote turn-on. I soldered all connections and heat-shrinked each individual wire. Even a monkey could get it right.

The majority of us who've done it have had no problems. Something is/was wrong there. Do you have another HU that you could try out?

Hey I did the same thing. I have an 2003 Alpine 9807- with the volume turned all the way to 35; the sound i expected just isn't there for me either in terms of volume. But it sounds good just the bass kinda sux.

Something is definitely being done wrong.

Funny though how both the problems are with Alpine.

Do you think i have could have plugged the RCA plugs in the wrong white/red connector ? I may try switching, could be a "polarity" issue

Your polarity can't be wrong if you're using RCA's

They only plug in one way.

Maybe you mean balance?

That's not your issue.

I just helped my friend install the same deck into his Nissan Sentra. Holy crap did it sound good in there. We didn't use the RCA plugs because he doesn't have a factory amp so we used the speaker-level outputs right from the deck. For comparison, his volume set to 15 was as loud as mine was cranked all the way up to 35. Same exact deck. I guess I'm stuck with the Bose for now...

Pearl96Max,

Have you ever used the 70-7551 with a Pioneer DEH P4800MP? If so, what were the results in terms of volume level?

Thanks,
Andrew

Considering the output voltage from the Pioneer would be greater then that of the Bose, it will sound justfine.

I installed an alpine unit with the 70-7551 a couple weeks ago, ant the sound quality was VERY good. I don't know what you guys did wrong.

Well running only off the deck, you won't get a whole lot of volume, but should be WAY better than the limits on the BOSE.
