ez question for you about wiring rear speakers

I am replacing the rear speakers in my 4th gen (non bose). The stock speakers have plastic connectors for the speaker wires. The speakers I am installing have a blade style connection, so I am going to put new terminals on the existing speaker wire. My question is, how do I tell which wire is positive and which is negative?? Also, on the new speakers, there is no (+) and (-) symbols, one of the blade connections is wide and one narrow... does that signify anything, because I can't tell which of those connections should be positive and negative as well.

Any help will be much appreciated. I can provide pics of that will make this easier.

ps - I did run several searches and could not find the answer. Thanks!

You're going to have to test the wires somehow..do you have a DMM or testlight?

The broader one is positive.

Take a 9v battery and touch its + and - to the terminals of the factory speaker. If the speaker moves outward, your + and - correspond correctly to the + and - terminals of the factory speaker. Then just look at the factory plug that plugs into the speaker to see what the factory colors are for + and -. If the speaker moves inward when you plug the 9v battery to it, your + and - are reversed. Or, if youve got 10 bucks, and your speaker harnesses are the small brown ones, you can go to circuit city and buy the harnesses so everything will be plug and play. Theyre $10/pair.

Ghetto install tips FTW.

I once used a subwoofer to figure out which was the brake pedal lead for an alarm.

great, thanks for the help. I don't have a DMM or testlight, but I will try the other method with 9v battery.

alright, I found the wiring diagram in my digital version of the shop manual.

Left Rear (+) red
Left Rear (-) green

Right Rear (+) light blue
Right Rear (-) pink

and as difrestyl mentioned, the wider blade connector of the speaker is positive and narrow is negative.

I appreciate the assistance. Hopefully this will help anyone else looking for this info as well. I am going to be finishing up with this project over the weekend.
