This is EXACTLY what I wanted to do in my car!

I recently had to remove my sub box for some recall work:


And I kind of liked having all the space and less weight too. The pics you posted are perfect, almost every shop in town is giving me the "no can do" for the set up you just installed. LOL they are jokers.

So how is it sounding? The Ascendant website says "the Assassin 8 is designed for ridiculously clean output in very small enclosures." yet you have them in the trunk as a free air application? How is this working out?

Would it sound any better if you actually had "free-air" subs?

 

It doesn't exactly say they CAN'T be used IB, but I do notice that these particular subs don't get quite as loud down low as I'd like but they are a step up from the DLS OA8's I had in there as far as low low notes. The DLS overall were a bit louder. (this may have something to do with the VC's, in fact I'm sure it does.)

 

DLS's are more efficient is my guess...

 

Not by much though..

The main issue is - DLS = 8 ohm svc = wired to 4 ohms mono to the rear channels bridged. Whereas Assassins - 4ohm svc = wired to 8 ohms mono to the rear channels bridged.

Yeah....... sadly . I was bein a lil naughty and hooked the assassins up in parallel to the bridged rear's () and the output tripled, they are very capable subs! I just wish I had more power to throw at them.

 

Please do a review on the way these sound. I'm curious how this setup compares to an encloses setup?

just ordered mine! haha i took the plunge and got tired of waiting for the 10" so do you think if i put 350watts at 4 ohm will sound good, or should i figure out a better wiring config for it? thanks! i cant wait! too bad i cant install till finals are over 2 weeks.

 

Well run it with the gain set down low for a while, let it break in before you romp on it. 350 @ 4 ohms is perfect.

 

I am looking at the same issue, 4ohm subs end up being 8ohms to my amp when I go mono. Now some DVC subs would probably work to get the load down to 4ohms.

I have an MTX5302 which is or 75x2 300watts mono into 4ohm.

 

And will you be running 2 8's?

 

Yeah, I am running 3 10s in an MTX box right now with it......They are wired to a 4ohm single input, so I have the amp bridged mono to em. It sounds pretty good. That's why I think it will be important for me to get some 8ohm woofers so I can wire them in parallel and give my amp a 4ohm load again.

So I just got mine a few days ago....i was wondering what gauge wire should i use?? and how to hook it up. the terminal posts are really small....i wish they had better looking ones that hold thicker gauge....

 

Yeah I agree, but you don't need massive wire, maybe 14 or 16 gauge.

 

I am running twelve gauge and 200Watts to each sub, and when I bought these I talked to Chad (owner) and asked if these can be used in infinite baffle and his response was yes not a problem they would work well and he was right! Had 400 to each at one point but I did not like the sound of mono amps so I went back to my polk audio amp.

 

which polk audio amp do you have?? what settings did you guys set everything to?? in my current setup i find myself always changing the setting around on the amp....any recs on frequency, gain, etc?? i have a polk audio 500.1 Mono Block amp. if that helps any...thanks! i cant wait to get this in on monday. My Second Skin is on its way as well i should get that by then, I hope.... Gonna deadend the entire doors, redo my rear deck/back seat and add more to the trunk.

Side question: have you guys ever hear this plastic flap on the driver's side trunk that spudders when you play music??? i
ve felt it before it feels like some kind of vent for the trunk and has a rubber panel that block water from getting in...it annoys me because it sounds horrible outside. Anyone know what im talking about? if so any ideas on how to take that thing out without taking off the entire bumper?? thanks!!!

 

running a 300.2 with a birth sheet that states 200 per, all my setting are on the radio and don't take out that flap. My buddy did that and his trunk got water in it.

 

Mine were crossed at 50 hz, sub duty only. Gain will be different per application.

 

you think if i put a sheet of Second Skin to cover it up if i take it out would be ok? you guys dont hear it...im only saying because id figure an IB settup would make that sound even worest with all the air movement and all....

Install Question: I saw that both of you guys mounted the sub from the bottom up, any particular reason why? I use to have the bose sub in there so there is a square like whole where the mount plate used to be (sold it) im going to make a new plate anyways out of MDF that will fill the whole and mount the sub from top or bottom. Which would be better? or does it matter...

The flap is to let water out, why would you take it out?

Ok so you can mount from the bottom so that you don't have any issues with the surround touching the grill/cover on top.

 

to keep more bass in and to help prevent my bumper from flapping around. I never check but I dont think I've had a problem with water in my trunk because it never smells in my car.

I am thinking about running one of these off of somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 watts RMS in my SpecV. I have 3 options- gut an OEM RF 8" box and run the Assassian in there, build a small box and put it where the OEM box is, or run it free-air in the location where you have it.

Given that I will be running such modest power, am I better to put it in a box, or do you think that one would be fine in the smaller cabin of the SpecV if I IB it in the same fashion as what you have done?

Space is a premium in the Spec trunk, so I am trying to be as efficient as possible. I also plan to mount my amp(s?) under the rear deck, much like you have done. Good work!

BTW- want to sell one?
