Subwoofer advice: Kicker

Subwoofer advice: Kicker
Hey guys... here is my dilema. I currently have a Kicker Solo-baric L5 10'' DVC sub & kicker's ported box (long & narrow) powered with a Alpine digital MRD-500 amp. Sub is rated @ 450RMS, & amp is 500RMS. I have a 4 gauge kit from knukonepts, 300 watt alpine amp for my speakers. Input is a Jensen in-dash DVD H/U. I have a Exide Gel battery & a 140watt alternator.
I'm not happy with the bass at all. First off, the sub's rubber outside rattles at full volume and sounds awful... fixed if I press my fingers against it. I don't think its the mounting but the rubber flexing, would a bad voice coil do that?
I'm thinking about making a sealed sub box and maybe getting a new Kicker sub/warranty. I don't work aka computer geek so plenty of time.
I had a JL 12inch in my Eclipse GS-T before I sold it. Loved it. That got stolen and had a Infinity 12inch, loud but didn't hit has hard. Like it. Going from a hatchback to a trunk I feel my current setup isn't what I thought it would be. I don't want crazy bass, just a single sub, good punch, pretty deep sounding.
Given what I have said. Which route should I go?
1.) Replace the Kicker L5 10'' and build a sealed box.
2.) Replace it with a L7 10'' in a sealed box.
3.) Replace it with a L5 12'' in a sealed box.
I don't I think a L7 12'' sub because I then would need a new amp.
Advice, comments.... suggestions? I did stick a sweatshirt in the ported hole on the box and it did sound better.

I think I'm going to try a JL 12'' w6v2.
Here is what I have in mind for a box: (inches) Width X Height X Depth
W:28 H:14 D:9 Thickness:.75 (3/4) = Interior Volume:1.43 cubic feet.
Sub mounting depth: 7.6''
They recommand:
W:18 H:14 D:12.75 Thickness: .75 = 1.25 cubic feet
but when I input that into the volume calculator I get 1.34 cubic feet
Whose numbers should I go by? I would like to go wide and narrow if I can. Any effects on sound, punch, deepness etc?
