Viper 791 issue...

Issue: When remote starting only, car cranks but does not start. Engages with no problem, cranks forever, then gives up after the allotted crank time. Car will not start with a key NEAR the ignition while remote starting either. Leads me to believe it is isolated to it being an immobilizer issue.

Had this issue before but it was swiftly corrected with a tach relearn. This time my luck is not as good. Tried to relearn the tach twice, and the LED indicated that it did indeed learn, but the problem persists. It's way too cold to be poking around under the dash so I wanted some direction prior to any disassembly.

This couldn't have happened at a worse time - right in the middle of the coldest winters evar

Any thoughts?

edit: just read somewhere that the tach can be relearned at a higher RPM...thoughts/opinions?
..and if that is a good idea, what's the procedure?

who put it in?

its def either a tach issue, or the key ring fell out of place. you lost a key when it was installed, correct? take your steering wheel shrowd completely off and fiddle with the circle of wire around the key ring.

it wont start with a key near the ignition because the computer is seeing 2 chips.

could also try to look at the tach connection (doubt this is it though). Its either at a coil/injector in the engine bay, or more likely at your ECM, pass side behind the center panel. its a white/green wire...

+1, check the connections at the 556u to make sure its getting a negative from the status output (blue), and check the ring around the key cylinder.

put the key in the ignition and attempt to remote start if it catches then you know the key may have become misplaced inside of the 556 module and or the ring may have become off center from the ignition. I cant remember if the key has to be in on RUN position while attemping to remote start im pretty sure it just has to be in the ignition cylinder.

Don put it in years ago. With the exception of a loose door lock trigger wire, fixed within 1 minute, this is the only other problem I've ever had. Mr. Donny didn't get a call because I was on my way to bed and was gonna call him after reading the responses the next morning anyway

Key ring should still be in place, when I first had this issue I took it all apart and zip tied that focker in there. Same for the 556u, one of the harnesses was loose and I zip tied that focker in there too.

Update:

My car seems to have some starting issues in general now. This morning (effing frigid outside), started with a key, hesitated, died. Had to start it again and rev for 2 seconds to keep it from dying...then it was fine.

Although this same issue *could* be related to the tach learn, when I got into work about 2 minutes ago (car was fully warmed up), I turned off the engine, started it (no problems) and did a tach relearn. Then I turned the car off and tried to remote start, and had the same issue as before. Cranks all day, won't start. This is strange because the car was warm, and the tach was JUST relearned as it was warm.

I'm going to try and troubleshoot the rough start this morning first before tackling the remote start. This could be a bigger (non-remote-start) related issue and it's probably best to nip the problem in the bud, so to speak.

Have/get your battery tested. I am beginning to think the battery is on its way out.

if theres a problem when you turn the car over with the key, then more than it likely doesnt have anything to do with the starter...

The starter just mimics what the key does when installed properly. sounds like you got something else going on.

take it to Don?

It's an Optima battery circa 3 years ago...didn't know they went bad?

I'll swing to Walmart or something and have them test battery/alt/starter.

Kev - does that have to be done immediately after a failed remote start?

sounds kinda like your battery doesnt like the cold. could always try a diffrent car battery first, if it works fine, get a new battery.

**UPDATE**

Strangely enough, it was the battery. During the course of this week, my cold starts after sitting overnight got progressively weaker. Until the point that I could not start the car yesterday. Had to work from home

Anyway, AAA came by and diagnosed my Optima battery was no good. Strange, I thought Optimas would last longer than 30 months. Got a new battery for free from Pep Boys under warranty, now the car starts up with ease...

But the RS problem persists. I must have relearned tach about 10x. No dice, the car, when remote starting, will sit and crank all day and not turn over. If I get some time this weekend I'll get under there and check all the connections. Will keep you posted.

if it just continues to crank, its usually not seeing the key/chip.

try disconnecting or taking the key out of the 55U, and putting it in the ignition, leave it off, try remotely starting..
