Alarm system confusion/noobery...

Sup all

Im looking for an alarm for my car and i'm simply overwhelmed by the choices and addons there are. (much like for audio) Im looking for some assistance. I was looking at the stickies and I didn't see anything pertaining to security other than wiring info.

Can you assist me recommending an alarm and some addons and what manufactuers to stay away from? I have a few things that I'd need...

*I dont need remote start
*Glass/shock sensor
*None of that gay 6-alarm tone crap (I'd want to install a seperate horn for the alarm)
*A remote w/ an LCD readout
*Starter kill

Which brands/models do you recommend? Anything special you guys recommend the alarm installer doing? Am I missing anything critical? I want my fogs to illuminate when i arm/disarm the alarm to make my car visible. How much $$$ am I looking at just for parts? I know labor will vary form installer to installer.

Thanks in advance folks.

Haven't found anything better than DEI 2 ways for the price... expect between 250-400ish for one before installation.

-Clifford
-Viper
-Python

In that order.. they're all about the same, the clifford being the top of the line because of some cosmetic/ergonomic upgrades..

Make sure you find a REPUTABLE shop to install it for you, otherwise it will be a big@ss headache, many times over.

So avoid big box retailers? I should go w/ independant installers instead? Im worried that the independant guys most likely wont offer a warrenty incase something goes wrong...

You guys recommend going to Tweeter for the install?

dont assume because you had 1 bad install at 1 place that the entire chain must be bad... Ive fixed many crappy best buy installs, but ive also fixed just as many local-RI shops crappy installs..

ask local people for a reputable place, find somewhere with great references, and take it from there. Its really a 50/50 shot...

If your located on the east coast, i can gladly install whatever you decide to buy, however i strongly suggest any product that is made by Directed (DEI). And at this point you might as well have the remote start. Since the price difference between just an alarm, and the remote start/alarm combo is minimal.

www.directed.com

Pretty much ..Clifford,Python and Viper

Shop around and check their work, find a dealer you feel confortable with both price and confidence. Price of course will vary.

Make sure theyre an authorized dealer and your warranty will follow you whereever you go. Buy online and have someone install it and your lifetime warranty is out the window along with your theft coverage deductable.

I never knew that Viper, Clifford, etc. are all under the DEI umbrella. I thought DEI was a separate brand all itself.

Well I have a Viper but most are similar brand to brand, clifford seems to be the best out of the bunch.

Those new remotes look really slick. The Clifford G5 and the Viper 5002 look like something i'd get.
