Thoughts or opinions on new setup

So my MTX 801d took a crap recently. I plan on sending it off to be repaired, this thing has been a real workhorse for me. I've pushed it everyday for the last two years and it has performed quite well. I've had a pair of Phoenix Gold Ti 15s in a small, sealed box. I never got around to finishing the setup by trimming out the box and amp rack and making it all look nice.

Fast forward to yesterday, a buddy who always loved my system saw my box in the garage as I had removed everything from the trunk when I un-installed the amp to send off. He offers me what I paid for the subs two years ago, and another 200 to install it, along with his amp and wiring kit.

I am a basshead, I can't get enough. With that in mind I'm thinking of getting another 801d to match my current one and running four 12s. Which brings me to the point of my thread.

Please offer suggestions for 12 inch subs wanting ~400w rms that are well suited for small sealed boxes (not that I'm constrained by anything but the physical size of the trunk). Cost is a consideration but not the deciding factor. (CMass UL12 no...)

If you were in my shoes what subs would you consider?f

4 Kicker CVX's, or old school Solo's, Assassin 12's, C-Mass Reference 12's, Blaupunkt VW1200 ($99 at crutchfield right now, you may not have enough power for them though).

If you truelly are a basshead you need to go ported to ~35-40 hz, even go with 2 12's in a ported or a 15 ported and you will have significant increase in output. Hell throw 4 12's ported!! lol

What about some JL w6's They are going to love getting 400w RMS and will sound pretty good, if not them try some Dynaudio 12" Subs, I dont know what the model Number is but they need some juice to make a decent amount of bass. Very Accurate sub though!

A pair of RE MXs?

One UL 12, yes just one. In the right enclosure will go into the 150s..

I highly doubt that, not doubting your knowledge, but the physical limitations of the maxima as far as audio goes...

Only way you would get close is to wall of the trunk, either behind the rear seat or through the rear deck, and sealing it off completely, sound deadening entire car, port on drivers side, sub on passenger, couple 6 inch aeros somewhere in the 1.5 cube range...

Just a guesstimate, you would need lots of testing to get it into the lower 50s consistently, let alone on music...

Thats for legal on the passenger dash, kick door open would be a lot easier, but cheating

Just stating the facts of the sub, not the vehicle. Its been done and published. Enclosure was designed and built by James formerly at AudioEnhancers. He was able to hit 154.

150s with a single 12? jeez...

i sat in a 155 (TL in the kicks) and breathing was getting a lil wierd. it was in CA.com's Moe Lester's SUV at the time. he had four MT 15s with several kilowatts going to it. a 50hz burp was painful.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them. I wondered about the C-Mass References when I was drooling over the UL on their site. Blaupunkt isn't a name I've heard used in polite conversation for sometime... I've always had a thing for Kicker too, my first sub was an 18" comp in a 4ft sealed box.

I've always run sealed after the bandpass craze of the early 90s made me hate the sound of port turbulence and poorly designed boxes. However, prior to my amp crapping out I was considering going with a new ported box for my PG Tis. I do want an increase in output over my current setup. So now I'm thinking two new 15s in a ported box or four 12s in a sealed. Decisions, decisions...

From what I read on the RE site the MXs are dual 2ohm which wouldn't be suitable for the 801d....

Damnit this is always how it starts. I just want new subs, then its subs and sub amp, then its front stag ad front stage amp, then its me shakin my *** downtown to pay for all of it...

Edit:

I'm going to stop while I'm on a roll here. If I ditched the 801d (doubt it's worth the trouble to repair and sell) and the idea of getting another and started shopping for an amp suitable of pushing a single UL12 or a pair of RE MXs what should I look at?

Arc? I read everywhere that they are KAR 1000v1? 1500 XXK?

I see in the CA&E aticle they powered the UL12 with a Zapco C2K9.0XD which has a what $3k msrp? whew...
