I have $1,000 to spend.. Need Help
Ok I have $1,000 to spend on my car audio. I have a stock system so far in my 1998 gxe. With $1,000 can I get my system to sound better than a bose? What should I get? I need advice.

Wow...this is the mother of all open ended questions. Ok, here are some questions for you first....
1. What kind of music do you listen to?
2. Do you like you bass loud and rumbly or tight and punchy?
Ok, here are a few suggestions for you..
Get a quality head unit. Everything starts here and so make sure you don't get a POS. Something that has a decent pre-out voltage, upwards of 4 volts. Good head units to consider would be Alpine and Eclipse.
A decent sizes 4 channel amp for your interior speakers and a nice sized 2 channel amp for the subs. Something in the 40-50x4 range will work for the 4 channel and something like 400X1 @ 2ohms will work very well for the 2 channel. Amps to consider would be Alpine, MTX and Rockford Fosgate.
Now speakers are a complete toss up. Everyone has different tastes when it comes to interior speakers. I personally like the JL Audio Evolution line of speakers. Others like Bostons, MB Quart, the list goes one. This an area where you need to go and listen to someone's system or go to a shop and have them demo speakers for you.
For subs this is also sort of a toss up, first off is the type of music you listen to and how you like your music. If you listen to a lot of rap and like low rumbly bass, then go with 12's then have great extension into the lower frequencies and can really pound. Now if you listen to a lot of rock and alternative stuff, I would suggest 10's. 10's will hit a lot tighter and accurately recreate those bass drum kicks. Now, I listen to a range of music and I have found that 10's are pretty suitable for any listen condition, it's just what do you want out of your system. Again go to a shop or listen to someone elses system to get ideas on different subs. Brands to consider are JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate the list goes on and on here.
Also get some quality wiring and make sure to either have the stuff installed by a shop or if you do it yourself keep the power wires away from the RCA's. Alternator whine is a system killer!!
Ok, sorry for the length, but I have a lot to say when it comes to systems. If you have any questions, please ask away.
