Good idea or not?

I have 2 Audioques 15" coming with the amp. Just wanting to know if I should screw the amp onto the box, or on the floor. I don't want the thing to shake apart.

Floor, only 4 channel amps on the box.

 

I mount all my amps to the car somehow.

 

Under seat here, there is a ac/heat vent under there to that aids in cooling.

arent you worried about people in the back seats possibly kicking the amp? AC Vent would make it an attractive location but i would be concerned of others kicking it, possibly dropping bottles that may leak on it...just seems like more room for issues, no?

 

Nah iam not worried, ppl dont ride in the back often, and it has steel covers over the connections so they cant dislodge the wires if they bumped it, no food in car so i dont have to worry about that aspect.

 

That can also aid in the creation of condensation on and inside your amp. Your choice though. Think cool glass in a warm room.

 

Oh, and both of my amps are mounted to my box.

What car are you putting 2 AQ 15"s in anyway? If it is a maxima, I hope you went sealed.

 

my friend mounted his 2 diamond audio amps to his TDX sub box and has never had an issue with overheating or anything (knock on wood). I would probably do the same if my 5 channel wasnt so long.

No problem. The one big SPL head I hang out with built an Astro with 8 Kicker KX2500.1's and 3 KX850.4's. The van he bought had the rear AC unit. I asked him if he was going to keep it to cool the amps, he replied no, and continued informing me of issues he has had in the past. 1) In order to make power, heat is a natural byproduct and 2) Any moister in the air will find it's way to the cold metal when super cooled. I have installed amps under the seats and never had issues. Just something I thought I would bring up as a possible issue.

 

Generally it's a bad idea to mount an amp to a sub box because the vibration can damage the amp. What happens usually is the solder joints will break in places and then the amp tech has to track down the breaks and repair them. But people do it all the time and many don't have the problem. To be safe it's better to mount the amp to the vehicle and not the box. If you ever need to remove the box you wouldn't be able to easily if the amp is mounted to it.

 

yeah my older fosgate amp fried, burned all the traces on the board, melted resistors, dunno the cause, it just went off at low volume and thats it.

How does a Heat vent aid in cooling?

 

I was wondering that myself, he forgets those vents provide cooling in the summer and heating in the winter.

 

My amp is mounted to the box, and I haven't had issues yet; however, summer might change this.

 

maybe he meant as far as air flowing over it to cool it? Anyway I have 2 12s in a 3.6^ft CRX style box with the amp mounted on the back so the air flow through the middle of the back seat will cool the amp. I dont recomend putting an amp on the back of 2 15 audioques though. Nice equipment though. I have a 15" Massive Audio DMX Stage 2 I have been waiting to install, gotta get another battery and some 0 gauge power cable first.

 

I've had my mono amp mounted to my box for about 6 months now, and no issues yet.

 

Looks like i'm going to have to mount it to the box. The freakin thing is huge. But , no worries. Thanks guys.

This is how I did mine in the floor. I am using 2 free air 8" JL subs in the rear deck. I moved my rear spkrs to the rear doors with 6" components for rear fill. I am using an alpine mrv1000 for the subs and an alp mrvt500 for front spkrs and an alp mrvt350 for the rear doors(not cut out on panel on pic yet)

I got the box. its about 39" long. Ummmm, had to cut off a peice of the fram from behind the back seat to slide the **** in. What a pain in the ***....the box isn't sealed either It does have a port. My bro ordered it and he said its tuned to 30hz, which will be fine with me if it is. But not I have no choice but to put one of my amps on the box. The others can fit on the trunk floor behind the seats.

 

Cut the frame for your sub box?? What the blood.

 

I installed professionally for 10yrs and I would recommend to NEVER mount an amp to a box. The vibrations in time will ruin an amp. You will get a cracked solder connection in time plus its easier to steal your system when they just have to pick up the box and cut wires. If you dont have the box mounted then its sliding around in your trunk which can pull the wires and you can have a short with power and ground which can damage the amp or send a short to the radio thru the remte turn on.
I've had my amps for almost 10YRS without a problem. You can look at my model numbers to verify. You can see my setup on post 25.
