Your iPhone is now your car key

I predicted this in a class project about 4 years ago, using a Palm Treo. it was only a matter of time.

$300 just for the SmartStart cellular module. I'm going to speculate that you'd still need the regular remote start interface, bypass modules and all that in addition.

That is correct sir. I actually saw this couple days ago as I was researching alarms for my car. I got really excited until i saw it was $300 for just the module.

Didn't know about the $30 a month. Still awesome though!

It's $30/year, not $30/month.

First year is free, then it is $30/yr after. For those that think that it is overpriced/not needed/etc .. do you not pay for texts ? calls ? emails ? Please tell me how !

The unit itself is $299, but nothing additional is required IF you have a compatible system. 2 posters in this thread already have compatible systems. I know both of em have Blackberrys though which could be the next victim.

well as soon as they begin to ship. Which is when, Don?

The service isn't all that bad... 30 a year? people spend more a month on cigarettes, fast food, etc.

They have been shipping, but to Best Buy only right now. Be a bit longer for the indys and Clifford/Python is right behind the Vipers.

that's pretty silly. Why only BB? they must have some deal worked out. My old shop in RI sold WAYYYY more DEI units than any other business in RI.

Because they helped launch it. This isnt really about DEI though, it's about the iPhone. BB is THE largest Apple/iPhone dealer in the country following the Apple store itself.

This seems cool but maybe its me or the people i know (that have iphones) one thing i hear alot is that the service is horrible, one roams in his own house in Westchester, NY then no serive at all in his GF's house on Long island (but hey its long island, lots of thingd dont work there, LOL) the other has spotty service and lots of dropped calls. Besides the service of the phone, this app seems real cool. So i guess my gripe is the phone, lol.

None the less great post

So technically...if your car is parked in a dead zone, this won't work.

OR, if your car has 'service' but your phone doesn't, it also won't work.

But no one says you have to use it as your primary remote. You could still carry that ...

I'm a minimalist

I have a crackberry anyway so this does not yet apply. I don't even think my current RS will be capable even if a crackberry app comes out.

Much like many of the comments I've read on various websites about this, people think they no longer need a key.. "IF your iPhone dies or you lose it, how do you get into your car!!! oh no!!!"

Its called the car key. It will unlock, and start the car. The iPhone is just going to RS the car, the second you step on the brake its going to shut down because it requires a key, just like any reg. RS system

Haha, reminds me of the debate in Old School, Frank the Tank's eyes glaze over, he spits some words, then comes back to reality.

Holy crap $300?!?!? For a module?

I paid like $180 for my entire RS/Alarm system, who are they kidding?

Though I guess iPhone owners are a great target for this.

This is pretty cool! I hope they come out with something like this for the BlackBerry (not sure I'd get it but it'd still be cool to see it working)

So now that the Blackberry/android apps are out, as well as "smartstart 2.0", what does everyone think about these? The vss5000 comes with an alarm and remote start, but no longer includes an extra remote to start the car, only can be used with the phone app.

Anyone have this? thoughts on it? Don?

This was already thought of about 5 years ago. My buddy is a distribution manager for sprint. One of his vendors approached him a couple years back on this. At that time it had no platform. They were needing to find a carrier. Nice, to see that the idea evolved. The price is still ridiculous! I remember that being a huge issue!?! Remote start works just fine for me, it doesn't keep charging me!

Any chance they might make the module compatible with my 4 year old Automate AM9? I would hate to waste all the money I spent on that and have to get a whole new alarm system.
