Lost sound to my subs
Lost sound to my subs
I have a Clarion HU and a GM-D8500M sub with 10 Polk DXi 10"s in the back.
I was driving back from Houston and the subs just stopped, no popping sound or anything. I checked the wires in the box and on the back and they are fine. The blue light comes on the sub so its getting power. I put a testlight on the remote wire at the sub and it lit up so that appears to be getting power.
I pushed in on the cones gently and couldnt feel or hear a grind so they are OK. I reset the HU just incase to see.
I dont have the keys to pull the HU out but I did tape all the wires back there so I doubt one is lose.
Any thoughts, ideas ? Am I going to have to track down keys and pull the HU anyway ?

Plug an ipod or similar devise into the amp with a 1/8th to RCA adapter cable. If the subs work, then it tells you that you aren't getting signal from the HU.
You can also unscrew the wires from the amp to the subs and touch a 9volt battery to those wires. If the subs move, then you know that the wires didn't come loose inside the box.
If you have a multimeter, you can set it to read AC voltage and check for signal coming out of the amp.
This can all be done without pulling the HU. If all that checks ok, then you need to get behind it and see if something is loose, or if your HU pre-outs died.

From power to ground I got 12
From the ground to remote I got 12,

For AC at the wires on the amp I get 1.0 to 1.9

I tried the battery trick and with the iPod and got nothing
Pushing on fhe cones there is no grinding feel or noise

It you put the battery to the sub wires, and the subs didn't move, the. You have a problem between those wires and the subs. Either wire came loose in the box or a lead in the sub broke. I have seen this where the wire runs across the spider.
They're fried. No ohm from the subs and I took them to a store and they said they are toast. They said the amp is good. Asked them why and they said they didn't know but could be any one of the following.
I had standard speaker wire from amp to sub which overheat and killed the coil
Under power and caused distortion and killed em. No distortion IMO
over powered an the same as above. not iikely IMO too
So now, recommend me 2 good subs that shouldn't die like the two polks in it. Listen to all spectrums of music buy mainly techno, rap and reggae

What is your budget? What amp do you have, and what are its power ratings? Do you plan on going with 10" subs again?
Just curious as to why they said the comment about your speaker wire.....what gauge speaker wire are your using?

I will be avoiding them. This is the amp http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Kz2yFqi...ml#details-tab
I want to stick with this.and the two 10s.

It's weird that both subs failed at the same time.
Are you planning to use the same box? If so, how many cubic feet does it have? What is your budget for the subs?
Kits from Autozone are generally not of high quality. What gauge power & ground wire do you have?

i would pull the subs out and test them on a home reciever or something just to confirm they are blown, i find it very hard to believe that BOTH would blow at the exact same time.
distortion will damage speakers when underpowered, but normally they will start grinding on the pole piece long before they just "fail" another option is that the outputs inside the amp have fried, this is VERY common, all the power will come on the amp, but NO sound output,
at this point i would recommend hooking up another speaker (any) to the amp and see if you get any sound out, if its a small speaker just make sure your at low volumes, if you get any sound at all then its "something" with the speakers, but i still find it very hard to believe both cooked at the same time and they arent seized up.
