Reading a Microchip

Hey for those guys who know about CMOS NAND Gates and CMOS Counters.
I have a question for ya heh

actually might not even have to do with those chips specifically...

How do you know which pin is number 1?
for example the chips have a groove at one end... does that denote pin1? if so... is left or right pin1?

thanks for the help

this is for a mini knight rider type of project.... for the hell of it

and for those who remember me... i'm still working on the fading light project hehe

From what I remember in the EE class that I took (I have a CS degree), pin 1 is usu. the first pin on the left side, closest to the notch.

coolies, Thanks.

Curious, anyone else say otherwise? If not, i'm sticking with the left side being pin1.

i'm going to get on this project probably tonight, or tomorrow.

looks fun and interesting.

Thanks again justmax.

Re: Reading a Microchip

Pin 1 is top left, if you hold the chip with the notch at the top and the pins facing away from you.

When you said; "Reading a microship" I thought you meant decoding the part number! If you ever want to do that, then go to the manufacturer's website and type in the part number. If there are letters in front and behind the chip number, you can omit them if the search comes back empty. I used to know most of the 74-series logic gate part numbers off-by-heart, but that was a few years ago...

So far I've seen many chips with a dot like symbol to represent pin 1. The dot could be a white colored one, or a round dip molded into the chip package. Some chip have the dot on its bottom side...
The best way is to search ht epart number online so you may get its datasheet with package info in it. I often use chipcenter.com and questlink.com or go directly to the manufacturer homepage.

i'm using a 4011 and 4017 chips

thanks a bunch guys

i'll take top left as being pin one. assuming top has the notch on it.
