1) Yes, most of us have installed our own subs.
2) Yes, you still need an amp. Your headunit probably has an RCA sub pre-out. That is far different from an amp large enough to power a small, efficient, ten.
3) Are you talking stock bose sub location? And no, not all tens were created equal. Many are closer to 9 inches diameter, and a few closer to 11 inches diameter. Aside from that they all need different enclosures.

Re: Possible to install the subwoofer urself??

Installing a subwoofer yourself depends upon how good you are with tools and electroincs. As far as your head unit goes its a pre-out which allows you to control the output level going to your subwoofer amp. So yes, you need an amp for you sub, but having the level control is nice, when you want to pound it, crank it up, when you don't, turn it down. The JBL GT1081 is a good sub for the money, what type of bass are you looking for? The sub will work in both a sealed or ported enclosure. Sealed will be tighter cleaner bass-requires more power; the ported will be "louder" and require less bass but can be boomie sounding. As far as it fitting in the car, I can't answer that question, I have a 4th gen, sorry. If you need any box specs or power requirements, let me know. How soon do you want to get the sub? We have some new stuff coming out soon that is going to be crazy. The new Power Series subs are mind blowing and the 12" will be MSRP for $399 which is a great price for what you get, trust me. We are installing 3 of the new 12"s in the Tundra in a ported box, we are thinking it should hit 155ish Not bad for 3 12"s For more info about it check the site or drop me a line www.jbl.com
