Need more bass in cab....5th gen...HELP!

Anyone have any suggestions? How can I get more of the bass from my trunk into my cab? I've got 2 Infinity Reference 10s & Kenwood KAC-729S The sound is TIGHT!!! But, its all in my trunk...Has anyone altered the armrest on a 5th gen to create an opening/port into the cab?

How 'bout removing the bose sub, will this disrupt the bose system any?

I think you can remove the Bose sub without affecting the rest of the system. Just unplug it and see what happens. If all is good, then just take it out. Also, what frequency do you have your 10s crossed over at? If it's too high, then the sound may tend to drift back and sound like it's in the trunk. About 70 Hz has served me well.

I'm gonna try removing the bose sub and see how that works. The subs are crossed at 50Hz so I get good drops & tight mids.

I was talking to a local car audio guy and he said they did an install on a max and they said they took out the bose sub, but don't know if they had to mod anything. Hope this helps

I assume that by crossing the subs over at 50 Hz, that your door speakers are playing all the way down to 50 Hz? If so, 50 Hz is pretty low for most door speakers and might cause some distortion at loud volume levels. If they don't play all the way down to 50 Hz, then you will have a gap between where they leave off and the sub starts. This can affect where your sub seems to be coming from. Try crossing the sub and speakers over at 60 or 70 Hz and see what happens. If you don't like it, then you can change it back.

Does opening the pass-through window to the trunk increase the amount of bass in the cabin noticably? (5th-gens do have a pass-thru, right?)

Not exactly sure what a "pass thru" window is...if this is through the arm rest, then No, the 5th gens don't have that. The seats fold down in a 2/3 split, but, I don't want to roll around with my seats folded down.

Well, the bose system has its own sub that hits the lower frequencies. I've got the bass on the head unit right in the middle so the stock speakers aren't distorting at all & the sub hits all the frequencies. I'm not compaining about the quality of the sound, but, the amount that resonates into the cab.

Well, it was more to find out if when you open access ot the trunk, you notice more bass in the passenger cabin. If you don't then you might be barking up the wrong tree, and might need better subs than infiniti references to get what you want.

Besides, what's wrong with rollin around with your seats folded down? I wish my max had fold-downs for when I put my stereo in, mainly for the purpose of an easy, $0 way to ventilate my amp well so it doesn't overheat over extended periods of time.

Now if you had mad ho'z rollin in the back all the time, that's another story...

I hear ya...yup, when I fold down the seats, the bas blows me away. But, its obviously muffled through the seats with no way to enter the cab....

My buddy's got an Audi A6 with a Bose system that uses Acoustimass Technology This is the kinda system I'm looking for ideas on...some setup that will channel the are into the cab. Kinda gets ya thinkin' doesn't it.....

Well, now you have me confused. Why are you mentioning the stock Bose sub if you have your own Infinity subs??

My whole point about mentioning your xover points had everything to do with getting the sound from your sub into the cab.

First of all, bass is non-directional. I have a 10-inch JL W6 in my trunk. The stock Bose sub has been removed. I have made no other alterations, and I don't ride around with my seats down. My sub is crossed over at 70 Hz low pass and my door speakers are crossed over at 70 Hz high pass (the rear door speakers are a little higher b/c they're only 5-1/4). My bass sounds like it's coming from the front of the car with absolutely no hint of it being in the trunk.

It's all about setting up your system properly. As someone else mentioned, its possible you need better SQ subs than your Infinitys. But, I would work with your xover points first and go from there.

If you want to try something different, I would ditch one 10 and go with a single 10. Make a speaker box than mounts to the underside of the rear package shelf and fire the woofer through the hole left by the removed Bose sub. Just a suggestion.

Raise the high-pass xover point of your front speakers so you can turn your bass up a little more. In this way, you can get more bass to your front speakers (they shouldn't distort b/c of the increased xover point). Then, correspondingly raise the xover point for your subs to match the front speakers. Try 70 Hz.

Don't over-think this...just try it!!

After reading tony's last response, something came to my mind...

Have you tried firing the sub(s) in different configurations?

With two 10s, you probably don't have many options to try. But you could try forwards/backwards firing configs at both the front and rear of the trunk.

What seemed to work best for me in the cabin of my last car was corner-firing my one 12" to the rear-drivers-side wall on the trunk. When I'd fold down my seat on the drivers side (for ventilation), the bass only got a smidgen louder in the cabin than if it was folded up. I tried the other common firing methods and this seemed to produce the loudest effect in the cabin. If you want a pic, it's in the library under:

Just trying to offer you as many things to try with the eq you already have as I can.

Tony is the man. I adjusted my xover to match the front speakers. That made a big difference. The bass doesn't seem localized in the trunk any more. very nice. I also removed the bose sub without any problems...so far...verdict...more bass in cab! I'm gonna tweak it a little more over the next week or so, but, I think we've got a winner. Next step.......sound deadening the rear deck & trunk.

I haven't played with different locations for the box, cause its just tooo big. I may build a custom box in the future, but, I found a q-logic box for $60 so I jumped on it....but its large.

turn ur subs around so they are facing your back seat, make sure they are far enough away, and enjoy the vibrations!!!

I always thought the general rule of thumb was to forward-fire only if you had your enclosure close to the front of the trunk/back of the rear seats. That if you have the enclosure near the rear of the trunk, to rear-fire. And that corner-firing maximizes deflection.

It always sounded better to me in both car audio and home audio to fire the sub directly or close to directly at the nearest wall/point of deflection. Might just be my audio applications, because of course the listeners ears are always the best judge.

elotoe - awesome! I'm glad at least something worked for you in this thread.
