Is paint supposed to crack on non-metal surfaces?

A few days ago I got rear-ended at some stop light and it took out some paint in my bumper. Some are missing while some are cracked. I got this bumper repainted not long ago. As far as I know I believe that there are two types of paints, one for metal parts and one for non-metal parts. Now, would the paint of cracked if it were painted with the non-metal paint? Or is it just the nature of paint on bumpers overall and it can not be avoided?

Paint on bumpers usually have a flex-additive that helps the paint not crack as easily when the bumper flexes in an accident. Obviously the paint is gonna crack if its hit hard, my paint did on my bumper, but the flex-additive helps it not crack as easily. Someone correct me if im wrong but i beleive thats how it works.

Well, the stuff seems to of peeled/flaked off and paint connected to it just cracked with lines going from the middle to the right side where it was impacted on. I was just wondering whether or not the place I went to did the right thing in using the paint with flex additive or not. I don't see any dents or feel any dents from what I can tell amazingly enough. Only damage done was to the paint. Whereas the first one that hit me before I had the paint job done made a nice dent line but no paint peeled/flaked off.

Maybe you could get an opinion from a different body shop. Or take it back to the people that painted it and have a discussion with them about it. They may have mixed the paint wrong and be willing to fix it. Won't know if you don't ask. Easier to make decisions with more information. That' just my opinion. Good luck.

i have this same problem because i accidently tapped my friends car.. its on the front bumper and like you said I cannot feel any dents but the paint just cracked where i see many long + thin black and lightcolored lines.. Its hardly noticable until you are like 2 feet from it but i'm not worried about it since I already have so many rock chips and my bumper needs new paint..
