Gunk engine cleaner

Do you guys recommend this product for cleaning engines? It states on the can to cover up any plastic/rubber components or wires. This seems like a lot of work, do you have to do this? As long as I aim the can at the actual engine block wouldn't that be enough.

when I used it, I just covered my alternator with a plastic bag. I also tried not to spray in the spark plug area, and around the distributor. worked good for me.. u might also wanna use CD-2 engine detailer afterwords.
