It just depends on the oil and filters you use. If you use Amsoil and a Amsoil or Mobil 1 filter you can probably get 15-20k oil change intervals as long as you change the filter every 7k. Mobil 1 you can probably get 5k. Redline you may be able to squeeze 10k change intervals.

You don't have to, but the oil filter is just as important as the oil itself. In some aspect it's more important. Mobil 1, Amsoil and K&N are the best filters. The STP, Nissan OEM and PureOne are the best regular filters. Do not buy FRAM! SVTPerformance.com has a link to a test done on paper media filters done in the winter time that showed a tremendous amount of paper media oil filters that had cracked. None of the Synthetic fibre media oil filters exhibited this problem.

First, the Mobil 1 filter will perform just fine on startup. It is a function of flow rate and the bypass valve PSI pressure rating. No problem there.

The trouble with paper element filters like the Motorcraft is that they can, esp. in very cold climates or in extended drain use, which some of do because we use the best synoils, the filter media can fracture. We have seen this in taxi durability testing, and in a surprising number of street cars. Once the element fractures, a large % of the oil is unfiltered. When was the last time anyone cut open about 100 filters and checked?

CU did oil tests a few years afo, and found the same thing - a high percentage of fractures in oil filter media.

The media used in Mobil 1, Amsoil and others are synthetic and/or glass fiber based. They are almost completely resistant to fracture, and have higher multi pass and overall filtering capacity.

Other than those reasons, I cannot imagine why anyone would not use the regular filters.

RE: Hastings - I have a concern about their ability maintain adequate flow rates.

RE: Ther Motorcraft oil and filter are "the best" for our cars. Says who - Ford? A degreed tribologist with no axe to grind either way. References count - do you know the credentials of your advisors?

Is the stock exhaust "the best for our cars". Are the stock tires "the best for our cars". Depends on your priorities. For tires, the stock F1's are a good compromise for day to day driving, wet weather, etc. For all out drag or track performance, they are not.

Same thing with oil/filter. The Moto stuff is fine, but some of us want higher performance.

You have to register and then do a search for Amsoil.

Possibly, if:

You change the OEM filter every 5k.
You have your oil analyzed after every interval to see how it's doing.

Me personally, I did the one year Amsoil interval for 2 years, with viscosity thickening noticeably at the end of 2 years, which can cause an "acidic" environment for subsequent oil changes and continuing to go 15k and up annually between changes and shorten the usable life of the new oil more than it was when I initially began using Amsoil.

Even though only doing 2 oil changes in that time was pretty nice.

how many miles did you put on in those periods? so how ever many miles you put in each interval, you think going that many miles is okay before switching the oil, so long as the filter is replaced every 5k?

I think it was 15k the first year and 11k the next.

I can't intelligently answer whether it's ok for you because I don't know your driving conditions and (especially) the current condition of your current oil.

Lab analysis is the best first step and then go from there.
