Causes of "shriveled" oil filter gasket?

It's not on my Max, but it's happened twice now on my POS Sentra.

My guesses are:
1)Overtightening filter(I always do that! )
OR
2)Excessive oil temps

I'm really clueless, but I'm pretty sure this is the cause of my recent oil loss and leak of about 1/2qt.. It's only happening on about 1/4-1/3 of the gasket.

Anybody seen this happen before?

TIA!

You should be able to move the filter with your hand AFTER tightening.

I usually tighten about 1 full turn to "crush" the gasket, then back off 1/3 of the way. Since taking this approach for the past couple of years, I've yet to have a gasket or oil filter removal problem.

Why would it shrink then? I mean it's almost as if it has been melted.

So, YOU spin it until it touches/stops, then hand tighten one full spin, and then back off 1/3?

Normally, I spin it until it touches/stops, then tighten by hand as much as possible in the contortionist position with my weiner arm, then give it a 1/3 or so of a turn with the filter wrench.

BTW, didn't take a Sentra sample, since nothing has changed, but I'll be taking a 4000-mile Redline 10W-40 sample tomorrow from the Max.

Good heavens....it's a wonder your entire filter can just doesn't crush from the pressure.

~150K and still going.

I need to find an inexpensive filter relocation setup. Any ideas?

Couldn't do it Bill.

Had to make sure it was nice and tight. I can't trust my arm as a torque wrench.

Do you coat the rubber gasket surface with fresh oil before installing? Do you clean the gasket mating surface on the engine before installing the new filter?
I only get the filter as tight as I can by hand (and no, I'm not Hercules). I'm not sure how many turns this would be after the gasket touches the engine, but probably only 1/2 to 3/4 turn. I've never had a leak from an oil filter this way, and I've been doing it for 18 years. When it is tightened by hand, I still need to use a filter wrench to remove it.
Using a filter wrench to install it may be deforming the gasket from the added torque put on it. Try only tightening by hand and see how it does. Also do the top 2 listed things above.

Yes, I coat the gasket and wipe the mating surface with a rag every time.

I believe it's either A)over tightening or B)excessive oil temperatures, however I doubt B) since BlackStone didn't report my oil has been overheated.

I'm going to *TRY* and use your/Bills' method next time. It's just hard to break old habits, especially when they can be fatal for the engine.

Thanks though!
