I use Mobil 1 every 4-5k miles. 10w 30 because I'm in Florida. I believe the owners manual calls for 5w 30.

10w30 or 5w30 in the manual. For synthetic use mobil1 or amsoil. If not synthetic only castrol GTX. Btw this is the wrong forum for this question. If you found the right forum you WOULDN'T even need to ask this question.

Relax Big D- this thread will move anyway.

I use mobil synthetic 5w-30, but believe that with higher miles on your car, you should use 10-30. someone correct me if im wrong.

It's 5w30 for the winter and 10w30 for the summer. Or is it the other way around?

I use Mobile 1 Synthetic 10w-30. The manual actually recommends 10w-30, but I think for the winter, it is supposed to be better for the engine to have a thinner oil. If the oil is too thick in the cold, it cannot get to all the working parts until it warms up. Not good. You want oil on all the parts of engine all the time, as soon as you crank it up.

I only use 10w30 because I only drive mine in the summer. I used Castrol Syntec Blend. Goes in clean and comes out nice and clean. I love it.

Quaker State Peak Performance 5W-30. I'm afraid to change to synthetics because I have 146,000 miles on my car.

Honestly, I'm afraid of using non-synthetic oils in my car, lol. Don't be afraid to use synthetic oil if you only have 146k miles, the VQ is built strong, so as long as you keep it well maintained, you'll be fine.

I'm using Mobil 1 15W-50 (yes I know it's thick). The thing is that I take some long trips for work (100+ miles per day some times), and I live down in Miami, Florida, so the heat here is horrible. Because of that, I like to have the most protection available (do I sound like a commercial or what? lol). On the tranny I got Mobil GL4 Synthetic Fluid.

Given that you live up North, You should stick to 5W-30 for winter, 10W-30 for the rest of the year. But like I said before, if your engine is in GOOD condition, there should be no problem with using synthetic oil. Just my 2 cents,

Eddie

I use whatever is cheapest. I see no reason to throw money away on expensive oil.

Synthetic oils actually protect older engines better than they do newer ones. It keeps everything lubed better.

"the VQ is built strong" shouldn't be the concern here. The concern is the rubber gaskets/oil seals beginning to leak after the introduction of synthetic oil. I'm not sure how likely this is to happen, but that is the idea.

Out of curiosity, where did you buy Mobil GL4 synthetic fluid? (all the Mobil 1 synthetic gear oils I see at Autozone/Walmart/etc. are GL-5 certified and contain sulfur compounds...)
