Changing filter w/ out changing the oil.

Changing filter w/ out changing the oil.
This is probably a stupid question but I have to ask.
I have changed the oil on my other cars, but not my max yet.
I usually drain the oil, and then replace the filter.
How is it possible to replace the filter but not the oil?
Won't all the oil spill out as soon as you take out the filter? Or is it just a small amount in the filter area while the engine is not running?
Or do you drain all the oil out, and then poor it back into the engine?
I am thinking about switching to synthetic, and hoping to take advantage of longer drain periods.

Oil filter is located higher than the oil pan what will spill out will be from what is left over in the oil filter not the pan
