engine oil for the summer?

What engine oil viscosity grade should I use for the summer?

3(10-30w) + 2(5-30w) or 5(10-30w)

I am not using synthetic, but am thinking about it. I have run 5-30 since day 1 and I suspect the climate here is not a lot different from yours, other than more rain in the winter here.

If it gets really hot, > 90 degrees, I'd recommend 10W-30.

Stick with 5w30. There is no need to switch oils for the change of seasons.

Just get 5 bottles of 5w30. That should do just fine for your neck of the woods...

In hot/summer weather, I gotta top off really often. I've changed over to red-top Mobil1 and don't need to top off anymore.

I continued this into the winter months, which was a bad idea cuz it took forever for the car to warm up (which may be a good thing, i dunno). So winters, I use green-top.

5W30 can handle that type of weather.

A 5W-30 SYNTHETIC can handle that type of weather. I wouldn't want a dino oil in there for very long under those conditions.

10w30 in death valley?
Whats wrong with 20w50?
I live in cali and Im thinking of switching to 20w50 synthetic. When my car warms up I almost have no oil pressure.
I thought 20w was for temps above 50 degrees(when the temp wont drop below 50).

That MAY be fine for older cars, but someone tried it with a newer Maxima and almost had to replace the engine. The oil was too thick. Tolerances are too small now adays.

I personally use 0w30 all year round in all of my vehicles and have done so since Amsoil came out with the 0w-30. Before that I used 5w-30. Summers near DC get quite toasty, coupled with horrendous traffic. I've never had any problems.

I guess my engine's well worn at 138k... 20w-50 works well for me in southern cali hot weather. Definite decrease in oil consumption.
