Is it better to use synthetic engine oil.

Is it better to use synthetic engine oil.
Product for product, I know some advantages of synthetic oil, but would I get longer engine life rather than paying more for every oil change. I wasn't sure if it was recommended to swap regular 10W30 for Synth.
