Never took the test. Never wanted to. Never had to. ASE took your money and you still don't know anything about engine oil.

Either one is fine in the majority of climates in North America. I use 5w-30 because it was mentioned in the manual. I don't think that you can "have something for nothing". On paper it may seem, looking at a quick chart, that 5w-30 is superior to 10w-30, given that it performs better in the cold, but I'd imagine - and I've read a bit about it (though frankly it's very unclear because information in this area is hotly debated and often erroenous) - that if you don't _need_ the cold-start abilities of 5w-30, then 10 is probably better. I live in Al, so I know I can make do fine with 10w year round, but like I said, the manual calls for 5w, so I'm simply deferring to Nissan on this one...plus the differences are splitting hairs anyway, for 99% of us.

A 5w30 vs 10w30. The 5w30 will have more viscosity additives to allow the oil to flow like a 5w when cold and a 30w when warm. As long as the oil changes are frequent, yes it's splitting hairs a bit

So if you use 5W-30 b/c of winters, why bother changing?

All I can see is if it is cheaper and you are at your interval anyway. Otherwise it is a waste to switch. Stick with just one. Especially if going Syn w/ longer intervals.

Sorry, this just perplexes me
My apologies for jumping into this conflagration late, but I think it is important to point out that there is a key difference between the 5w-30 and 10w-30 M1 products, and it's not just the cold starting vis. According to Mobil's own data, the 5w-30 has a HT/HS (high temp-high shear) viscosity of 2.99. The 10w-30, OTOH, has a HT/HS of almost 3.2. Earth-shaking? Probably not, but one thing that I've noticed as I've studied my own UOAs and dozens, if not hundreds of others, is that the wear metals do seem to be lower in a given engine type with a higher HT/HS vis. Personally, I'm using a 3.5 oil, and getting great UOA results with it. Anyway, if a higher HT/HS is important to you, then that would be a factor in favor of the M1 10w-30 vs. the 5w-30.

Is this guy for real? This has to be someone's stupid idea for a joke...this guy sounds like he's in Junior High. You'd think he'd have grown up some during that 33 years of experience. Someone please get this clown out of our forum.

While a career as a technician is to be respected, it doesn't mean that a mechanic knows the most intimate ins and outs of how and why something works. He or she knows how to repair and maintain something, and maybe only a little more. It's one thing to be a "wrench", it's another thing to be an Engineer. Try getting an engineering degree (in this case Mechanical or Petrochemical) and then call us to explain your bit.

Mr. "ASE-CERTIFIED", you are an example of the very reason why I do all my own work on my car. Please stop disgracing your fellow technicians...you're setting a bad example and giving your co-workers a bad reputation. The E in ASE stands for Excellence...try pondering the meaning of Excellence before you open your mouth.

I'm guessing from the odd writing style, the infantile emotional tone, and the hopelessly crossed up facts that this is the same individual who has passed himself off as "Armelius" and a couple of other names that I can't recall at the moment. The mods can and should excise this tumor, but alas, it will be back. . .

Nice call. If he comes back, he will get owned again. If it gets bad and no longer entertaining, the whole thread will get deleted and he will get banned. It's not as if information on various viscosities and the diff inbetween dino/synthetic hasn't been discussed numerous times before.
