Changing trany fluid, when, which, and how many qts?

Hi all,

i have a question about changing trany fluid, My car is auto trany (27000mi).

Is there any difference between doing full flush and partial flush? (in terms of how to do the oil change). Is it necessary to remove the trany oil pan for full flush?

Do you guys feel the difference after changing the fluid?

Please correct me if i am wrong. Partial flush need 4qts, full flush need 12qts?

Also, I read several people here in this org mention that using Mobil 1 is not a good idea since Mobil 1 contain a lot of zinc on it. So NIssan Matic-D is the best idea. Is that statement correct?

Thanks for the anwer btw.

For a full flush, you need to go to a garage that has the flush machine. They hook up 2 hoses to the input and output of the tranny lines, and a pump on this machine pumps fresh new tranny oil in, while pushing the old dirty tranny oil out(they dont usually drop the pan when they do this). This is really the best thing to do. You can just drain the 4 quarts, then replace, but it's not as good for the tranny.

IF you were at 50 or 60k and had never changed it yet, I would suggest dropping the pan, cleaning the screen and the magnet off too...then putting it all back together, then getting it flushed. It's up to you if you go that far. I didnt bother to do that...tranny's shiftin fine cept for the bit of slowness from 1st to 2nd which I can live with. I do 95 percent highway anyways.

You'r only at 27k miles, so if it was me...I'd wait until 40 or 45k until I did it...unless you really hammer the trans alot, I think it will be fine until then.

I did my first tranny flush at 50k and used Valvoline synthetic. I noticed smoother shifts. The usual 1st to 2nd gear slowness is a bit better. All the other gears are tight too...no slow shifting at all.

Enjoy!!

I'd do the total flush. It's not that hard, check the "how to's" section for help. I did the total flush, in conjunction with adding a tranny cooler and noticed smoother and sharper ****s. I just flushed the tranny in my wifes minivan at 75k and it feels a lot nicer now. Good luck!

I have a 02 Max and did a drain and flush. Four qts come out when you pull the plug. I caught it and measured quite carefully. I decided I didn't want to buy the Mobil One since it would have required 12 for three drains and refills. Instead I talked with the dealer service dept and determined that any Dexron III would work. The Nissan stuff probably is at best a blend, if that. I used 12 qts of Chevron that I bought a Kragen at 0.89/qt and it seemed to work just fine. Four drain and fills give you something over 85% new fluid, you can never get 100% using this method. I plan on putting in four at a time at every other oil change after a few more miles.

I heard on the radio in my area that Aamco offers what I think is called a "power purge" or something like that which connects to your transmission and does a complete and thorough job. The promotion is $99.95 for the life of your car. I was thinking about going.

Is it a re-useable gasket?

The old gasket is most likely damaged during the removal process. Mine was torn into pieces.
