mobile 1 15k oil after 7k miles

Its been about 7k miles now on the new mobil 1 15k extended oil. a few things ive noticed is that the oil is almost as clean as it was when i put it in 7k miles ago and i have yet to burn any off. usually after around 5k miles with normal mobil one i would have burned off about half a quart. im interested to know where i can send a sample after 15k to see how it held up

Just did a search on google for you:

looks like the first analysis is free

I'm curious about this stuff as well. I haven't known anyone that has used it yet though. keep us updated

Good to know it 'looks' new but only a test will be able to tell for sure.

so that means the stuff is actually good?!

i thought it would be kind of a sham. ill consider using it. less oil changes the better... less $ spent(cuz im too retarded to change my own oil )

Would this oil be worthwhile for a low-mileage driver? I have been considering switching to Mobil 1 synthetic. I use Castrol GTX most of the time. My car isn't a daily driver and I only put on 5K a year, sometimes less. Could I go a year with this oil, or just straight Mobil 1, using the OEM Nissan filter?

I have gone as long as 11 months without changing dino oil with 3,750 miles on the interval, but a stealership recently suggested I change the oil every 6 months regardless of mileage (potential for moisture in the oil with lack of use).

Is that your recommendation for synthetic as well? If so, I'm better off to stay with the dino juice.

yea i think so, because regardless of what oil you use, water can still get in there, and that could cause lots of issues

Then I think I'll just stay with the Castrol GTX 5W-30 and change it twice a year.

We have Wal Mart here and that's where I'd get the Mobil 1 if I decide to go that route. I still think I should be able to go somewhat longer than 6 months on synthetic because a longer OCI is supposed to be one of the key benefits of using synthetic.

I've used synthetic oil for years. I have had very good results with it. Never had it tested, so I have nothing to back it up with. My wife's 94 Town and Country has 160K and doesn't leak or burn any oil. I've been running synthetic since 1989 when I had a cam shaft break on a Mazda and go into the cylinder head at 42K and the Mazda garage said it was due to bad oil. I had been using Castrol GTX 10W-30 changing the oil every 3K until that happened. Could of just been bad luck, but I decided not to take a chance with the quality of oil again. My .02

It means you can mix the oils together and that it will not damage the seals. Synthetic will clean up deposits inside the engine which maybe blocking a leak therefore seeming to cause an oil leak in the engine. So synthetic will not cause a leak but may bring a leak forward as a result of cleaning the engine. This is the main reason some do not suggest using synthetic oil in high mileage vehicles. I switched a '94 Town n Country to synthetic at 85,000 with no negative side effects. It now has 160,000 miles and running great with no oil leaks or useage issues. The oil had been change every 3000 miles previously.

I ran Mobil 1 for a few years, changing it at about 3000 miles. Then I finally found an Amzoil dealer and have not looked back. Last oil change was about 20,000 miles, with a filter change at 10k. Saved me alot of time and waste oil cleanup, and the cost is only a little more than Mobil 1, (under $7 a quart). It's definately worth it and I also picked up 1-2 mph ave from switching the 80-90 in my trans out for Amzoil as well. I almost became a dealer back in 1984 when I was in high school, but my dad wouldnt let me (bla-bla). They have been around for so long for a good reason.....a great product.

You've been on the same oil for 20000 miles?? Does it still look new?

No, it doesn't look new, it never will. The most important measure of an oil can only be done by a lab, and some people do test their oil. In one account a few years ago, A commercial diesel truck went over 400,000 miles on ONE OIL CHANGE. The owner frequently tested the oil and the results kept saying it was ok to keep going. Here is a link to an article on it.

Since my daily use cycle is mostly short trips, I just opt to change the oil at 20k, party because I don't have the bypass oil filter, which works with your existing filter. It ends up being alot cheaper than changing the oil once or twice a yar, I think I went almost 2 years on this last change.

rmurdoch, my wife drives her car about 12k a year and I use Amsoil Series 2k and change it once a year with a filter change at 6 months. Oil Analysis has shown I could go longer, but I normally change it anyway.

I just use the standard 10-30 Amsoil and I'm quite happy with changing it at 20k.

All of Amsoils oils are long interval oils. Their standard line has always had "up to 25k" change intervals. The Series 2000 0W-30 has "up to 35k" intervals. Within the last few years, they came out with a lower end product with a 7500 mile change recommendation. Although it's a fine oil, I wouldn't even bother with the 7500 mile oils. It's your choice between the other 2 lines. The standard line costs $4.60 a quart through either talkinghorse or iwannambw on this site and $6.60 a quart for the Series 2K 0W-30. The S2K has slightly better wear protection and better mpg. Honestly the mpg isn't that much better. For me it's about 1mpg higher with the S2K. I personally buy the S2K just because it's the best they offer and I want the added protection since I do long intervals.

I also use the S2K 0w30. I got mine via Talkinghose. Great oil.

how many miles on your max and when'd you switch to synthetic?

(i recently broke 100k and want to go synthetic, but am afraid that it might clean out gummy residue that are sealing leaks)

I switched to synthetic on my 98 max at about 40,000 and no problems at all. Also, when I switched the trasmission fluid to Amzoil, I got about 1-2 mpg average increase.
