too late to use synthetic motor oil?

i have 100k on my 98 SE......i have been reading about how much better synthetic protects ur engine then normal motor oil?

i dont see any oil leaks coming from my engine.....if so not anything dramatic....i was just wondering if it would help to switch to synthetic motor oil instead of using the regular stuff?

is it worth the $?

well you can run a higher intervalts with Synthetic oil as suppose to regular oil.
I change mine every 5000 mile. I don't have a turbo or supercharger. I think for you it might be too late with that much mileage.

it's never TOO LATE per se, but you very well could discover leaks when you switch to syn. it doesn't mean synthetic is bad for your car (actually, it's the opposite), it just means there are problems you need to fix.

check the fluids forum for more info, but imo you should both think about switching.

edit: heh, this actually was moved WHILE i was posting...

Well I started to use mine when my car had 49K, and it's still good. Maybe that would help.

I saw a post a number of months ago that suggested not even starting to use synthetic for a 4th Gen until 70K. The individual making the post seemed to know what he was talking about and I took note of what he said in my data base, being as I take note of everything, lol.

I have 58,400 mostly highway miles on my 95SE and I think I will switch to Mobil 1 in about 2K when I'm due for my next oil change.

Ok, Well I just switched to syn at 275K in my 89 maxima and it runs great. no flushing, leaks or anything. I dont even think I changed my oil filter, OK so I did, but thats not the point is it.

Do the swap. As mentioned earlier, it's never too late. If the max has high miles when you do the switch, just check for leaks. If it leaks, replace the gasket(s). Done...............

Do the swap..but do it gradually by following this recommended procedure:

After the first 1,000 miles, change the filter. Add a new filter filled with synthetic.

After the next 2,000 miles, change the filter again like before.

Make your next change at 5k, both oil and filter.

From that point onwards, you can go 6-10K between changes.

The reason you change filters often in the beginning is that the synthetic flushes out a lot of gunk left over from the previous oil, and into the filter.

yay! someone posted my question so I didn't have to wait 3 weeks for me to get 15 meaningful posts so I could ask my question.

I just hit 100k last week, 98 (gxe though) just like the original poster.

Aparently the consensus is that it's never too late to change to synthetic.

question: should I use the OEM nissan filter when I switch to synthetic? lately I've just been using the first cheap thing I could find because I've been hitting 3k miles every 5 weeks.

question2: How can I tell if there are leaks? dark spots under my car from parking overnight and in the lot at work?

Don't use crappy filters. The consensus is Nissan OEM filter, or Mobil 1. Look for fresh spots on the pavement/floor.
