Ok, yes with Blends you can switch back to dino whenever you feel like it, But you can also do that with full synthetic, its an old myth that you cant and anyone who tells you otherwise has no clue what there talking about.

Change intervals can be extended (Mobil for example says go 5k on dino, 7.5k on blend and 15k on EP full sun) but they can not be extended as much as that of a full syn

Personally my big problem with blends is that there not a 50-50 mix, some have like 3% synthetic oil in them. Therefore you dont get as good of a value as you do with either dino or full syn.

German Castrol-Yes its still around (Although new batches are not green anymore) its still a great oil It can be found at Autozone, It only comes in 0w-30 (And no that is not to thin, it i will flow better at cold starts but once up to tempurature it is actually a very thick 30wt, almost a 40wt, much thicker than for say M1 10w-30) Make sure the back of the bottle says "MADE IN GERMANY"

Just be careful not to get regular syntec, its still a decent oil but it is a Group III oil (Not synthetic but a highly refined dino) Wheras GC is PAO (A true synthetic like M1 etc) For the money M1 kills regular syntec but GC is king (if you can find it)

Good Advice. Don't feel the need to qualify any of it.

I don't know if many people use German castrol in their maximas, do they? I've only only used 10w-30 and 5w-30 dino oils. But i guess the 0w-30 will work fine too.

Theres a few who use it, i would if i could find it. Its not as big here as it is on BITOG, over there theres a few people who use it esspescially in VQ35's but from what i know our engines tend to love thicker oils (Oboviously to an extent i wouldnt go above a "lighter" 40 weight) Again if i could find it i would use it.

konak85,

kcryan did a great job answering the GC question. He is correct; the VQ likes a heavier 30 weight oil like Amsoil or the GC. I just started running, so I have not sent it to the lab for analysis. The GC will not have an API Starburst (Energy Conserving) like the regular Syntec.

As for synthetic blends, the only one that I would use is Schaeffer's Supreme 7000 Blend which has 25% PAO (basestock of Mobil 1) with 75% Group 2+ or 3 basestock with an additive package that blows away Mobil 1. I have not seen a bad analysis (UOA) from this product. Unfortunately, this brand is only available through dealers and a few speciality shops.

Eh, blends don't justify the extra costs. Either just run Castrol GTX normal dino or run a quality full synthetic like Amsoil, Mobil 1 etc......

I've been running the GTX for about 30,000 miles. Pulled the valve cover and it's sparkling clean. As is the valvetrain. 3-4k mile oil changes.

So have you run synthetic before, Jeff92SE. I've been debating switching from dino for some time. I always use Castro GTX5W30 unless I am at the stealer for something, which has been all of 3 times in the last 5 plus years, and the last oil change at the stealer was free. I can't totally justify the switch to Mobil 1 as I am a low mileage user and may only put on 5 or 6K, mostly highway miles a year and I think a 1 year OCI might be too long.

by the way M1 has recently changed there line, and of there 30 weights regular M1 (not EP) 5w-30 is the thickest once the car is at temp
