Motor oil in manual tranny?

You should post on BITOG in the appropriate forum and be prepared to be ripped apart by more knowledgeable people concerning lubricants and gear oil than you will encounter on the .org.
Stand up and be a man, I dare you!

You've already been banned for this isht. When the hell will you learn?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with what I said. What did the transmission shops tell you, or did you even ask?
Why are you reluctant to post on BITOG and get an informed response there?

I find it funny that you posted here accusing me of not posting on BITOG before actually checking to see if I had. Never troll before you check your facts, d*ckwad.
I did ask very knowlegeable mechanics who do a lot of transmission work, and the universal response was "hmmm... I guess it'd work... whatever, give it a shot."
BTW, in case anyone cares, here is the "ripping apart" I received on BITOG:
They sure ripped me a new one there. Whoo. Look at me shakin'.

Many cars did spec engine oil. Gearbox oils are designed specifically for them and simply work better and the tranny will last longer. Engine oils work best in a engine.
I have several race ATV's (2 strokes) that originally spec'd 10w40 engine oil for the gear boxes. I have switched to gear oil (75w85 is close to a 40wt engine oil), and will soon be switching to SF's MTL w/o FM.
Gear oil's have EP and FM adds that PCMO and HDEO do not have. A lightly loaded gear box (such as in my ATV's) usually will survive on engine oil, but that is really a compromise, IMO, since there are oils made just for gear boxes with all the right adds. I'm sure I have missed some items, but I've found there is always more to learn!

Most engine oil additives are heat activated and designed for non-EP, piston type motion. I think to a T it is always better to use an application specific lubricant.
Gear oils wouldn't be good at all in an engine. Engines oils will work in a tranny, but not be optimum.

My Pukeout 504 spec'd motor oil for the trans. The dealer said that gear oil is what they used and that the only reason that they could think of that the manual spec'd it was because (perhaps) availability was limited in Europe (or the third world).
Back on point... From what I can tell so far, the difference is that engine oil is made to work in a thinner layer and works best against frictional contact across relatively large surfaces. Gear oil, on the other hand, is made to insulate against stress that is concentrated on smaller points. So motor oil will work just fine in a gearbox, but it may not be as good at keeping the teeth on the gears from rounding off in the long run. It also won't climb the gears as fast, which means you need Lucas oil stabilizer to help it along. It should be just as good as gear oil for the bearings too.
So, while there is still no substitute for a good gear oil, motor oil and Lucas seems to be a great substitute for mediocre gear oil.

You neglected to tell the BITOG forum that you were using engine oil and Lucas Oil Stabilizer in a Maxima until I informed members in your thread. I wasn't trolling, I was merely adding clarification which you were loathe to do.
You were getting responses related to ATVs and motorcycles as a result. I helped to put your BITOG post in context and have yet to receive any thanks from you!
The posts you are quoting from came before the mention of doing what you did in a Maxima.
It will be interesting to read other quotes as they filter in over the next few days.
Keep us posted!

Neglected? Can you read? As I said, I left that info out on purpose to keep the question short and to the point.
I was loath to clarify? How about you were loath to see me not get jumped on, so you kept trying and trying, but now you're lightening up now that you're seeing it's not gonna happen?
You say you put my question in context? What context did it need? It certainly got me the information I was after, i.e. that motor oil will work, but it's formulated for a different kind of friction so it won't necessarily be optimal. That's exactly the answer I was looking for, and I got it completely without help from your incredible contextual sensibilities.
Your only positive contribution to this question was "post on BITOG", which is buried under so much bombast and condescension that you hardly deserve acknowledgement for it.
You really, really need to think about how you're coming across when you post.

I suggested you go to BITOG regarding what you were doing to your Maxima transaxle. You did not specify anything about a Maxima transmission or transaxle in your post, consequently it was generic in nature and could have been referring to anything under the sun with a motor. BITOGERs post about lawnmowers, ATVs, motorcycles etc, the least you could do was state what vehicle you were referring to and that is all that I did.
All the best, I wish you better luck with your next transmission and choice of gear oil!

d00df00d - listen...if you're going to do something that's "out there" to your car..you're going to have people question it. if nissan tranny was able to use a 10w-40 oil that cost 1/3 of the price of a good GL4..wouldn't you think they would do it so they can fill their pockets with the extra $?
this is your warning because the ONLY person i see here that's getting out of control is YOU. seems like you can't take it when people question your actions. Do you see anyone else using d*ckhead in their post but you? yup...only you.
also next time if you can't handle people questioning your actions DO NOT REPORT THE POST TO THE MODERATORS!
bottom line...if you feel that using 10w-40 in your tranny works...then do it. if your tranny fails you have no one to blame but yourself.
