Switching to conventional motor oil after 120k miles on synthetic?

I am thinking of switching a 5th gen VQ30 car, from Synthetic 5w50 to conventional GTX 5w30 after it has been supercharged for 1/2 of its life and been using 5w50 synthetic oil. Is this advised? The supercharger kit has been taken off the car now, and it will be run NA.

The owner is saying that he doesn't advise this, as all the "protectants" built up by synthetic will be wiped away by the conventional oil, and I may experience significant oil leaks. What do you guys think??

You can do it no problem, but why? Dino prices are going up and syn prices are mostly staying the same, so the cost margin is smaller, and the fact that you can run it longer makes up for most, or almost all of the rest, the added protection covers whatevers left.

So my answer, yes you can switch every oil change if you want, it doesnt matter, but i wouldnt.

Being as you live in Canada, forget about the Amsoil and head to the nearest Esso bulk plant and buy a case of Esso XD3, 0w30, PAO full synthetic and run it year round.

I switched from dino to it in February at about 63K and my VQ loves it.

Go to www.bobistheoilguy.com, sign up, and run a search. A lot of Americans would love to deep-six their Mobil 1 5w30 and convert to this oil. It has shown superior UOA and VOAs as it does not shear down like Mobil 1. It is a heavier 30wt at operating temperatures and lends itself to longer drain intervals and costs about 2/3 of what Mobil 1 runs in Canada.

It would also show better startup in cold winter conditions. Trust me on this one!

I really dont want to go 0w30 though, does Esso XD3 come in 5w30? And how do you find where their bulk plants are located? I am in the GTA.

Thanks

Nope, never used amsoil, no local dealers i know of, and im not paying shipping, its good oil though.

Esso is real good stuff, it gets German Castrol (GC) comparisons all the time, i consider going up to canada all the time and grabbing a few cases, i just never get around to it, I agree with bobo on that one, if you can get it well priced, do it, its hard to beat. but again anything from what ive heard so far will serve you well.

The Esso XD3 is a diesel oil, suitable for gasoline engines. It does not come in 5w30 weights, just 0w30 and 0w40. Read the product monograph on the Imperial Oil website.

It is not an energy-conserving oil. My fuel economy has not been compromised by using it one iota, and may in fact have improved, but it is hard to tell as I just finished an AutoRX application before switching to it. So any improvement in fuel economy may partially be attributable to the AutoRX as well.

Don't fret about 0w30.

As far as the bulk plant is concerned, have you ever heard of the Yellow Pages? Alternatively, stop in at your nearest Esso gas station and ask them where the nearest bulk plant is. This isn't rocket science!

You shouldn't get oil leaks by going from synthetic to non-synthetic. It's just that non-synthetics in general will not protect quite as well. If you have to go with a dino oil, though, Castrol GTX is a decent one.

If you do decide to go synthetic, don't worry about the difference between 0w-30 and 5w-30. It won't matter nearly as much as it would if you used dino oil.

I'm with him on this one.The cost issue is less of a factor and the protection you get from syn outweighs the lesser cost of the dino.
