can you change oil filter but not the oil?
can you change oil filter but not the oil?
So I started to change my oil, and I realized I used my last filter on my last change. couldn't stop there cause i already drained the oil so I went ahead and put in the new oil, and kept the old filter on.
now im wondering, is it possible to take out the old filter and put a new one on or will all my oil just spill out?
thanks in advance.

Talkinghorse is correct. There are a number of threads on this site where people recommend that with long-drain interval synthetic motor oil that you change the filter one time before you end up draining and changing the motor oil. So if you were planning to run synthetic motor oil for 10 K miles, you would plan to change the filter only at about 5 K miles.
Doing it the way you are planning to do, you end up with about one quart (actually the oil capacity of the old filter) of old oil circulating with the new oil you placed in your oil pan when you changed oil. Based on this, I suggest that you plan to change oil next time (after buying a new filter) earlier than you normally do. If for example you change oil every 7.5 K miles (like I do), you should change the oil at between 5 K and 6 K miles, due to the old oil still in your system.
You might also consider saving the oil that is lost when changing the filter only to use to make up for the oil needed to fill the new filter.
