synthetic oil...............

hey guys, my brother is a member of another Nissan and his friends told him that using "fully synthetic" motor oil will make the gaskets leaks oil later. Wonder what you guys think? I have a 00 and always using "fully synthetic" oil.

If you ALREADY have seals that are worn, synthetic oil will expose them sooner because it will leak more readily. That is all. Synthetic oil does not actually harm seals.

yeah not sure what i have to say applies, but i switched to 5w-30 synthetic at around 160,000 miles. Then started to notice the engine was leaking a bit and burning it too. at least a quart every 3000 miles. So this oil change I went with a 10w-30 and will see how it goes. No spots on the garage floor so far and its been about a week. i dont know much about it, but it appears running synthetic isnt going to work for me ?

only if it says so on the bottle when you buy it.

I know that...

I was asking if the 10w-30 that Caesars Chariot says he switched to was synthetic.

In the past I owned an 86 Celica that I bought used. The engine burned synthetic oil like it loved the diet. I switched back to dino oil and the oil consumption went down about half to about a quart every 6 K miles (the oci I was using at the time). In both instances I was using 10W30 weight oil. I regretted buying that car used, and have never even looked at another used car. There were other problems with the sun roof, etc. But there were no noticable oil leaks on the garage floor from either oil.

If I did my own oil changes I may have went with synthetic, but my only reason would be prolonging the lift of the engine...Ive driven 64,000mi since new on dino with 3,500mi changes done religiously, ive heard from mechanics that this is all it takes to get the most from this motor.

04Black,

You are certainly safe doing this. If you are using a good dino oil like Castrol, I would consider pusthing your oil change interval to 5 K miles. Check the stickies here for the best dino oils.

I have used Mobil 1 for a long time...in virtually ever car I've owned.

I love it.

Woo hoo! My 15th post.

I've used shell fully synthetic 10w-40 for the past 4 years and have no leaks so far. So it wont cause damage to the seals if they have not already been damaged. The synthetic is made up of smaller compounds, and hence why it will leak easier than normal motor oil.
