Just made the switch to synthetic @15k miles

I was kind of leary about the service center at my dealership, always leave their grease marks somewhere on car, and rather than clean up their mess again I decided to start doing my own oil changes.

First thing I did was to check this .org and picked up the Mobil 1 5/30 Supersyn and their M105 filter. Boy am I glad I made the move. When changing the oil (3.3k miles) it stunk and was black and the puny little oil filter had a dent in the side and was probably not doing its job.

I let it drain completely and then put 4.5 qts in and expected the level to be a bit low w/the bigger M105 but it is reading high. Anyone else experience this?

Thanks

You need to run the engine before you check the oil level. This fills up the filter with as much oil as it will hold. Then check the level, after letting the engine sit for a while. Check out my earlier thread on "When to Check Your Oil Level."

After I changed the oil I ran the motor for 30 seconds and shut it off. Then I took it for a ride and checked the oil again within ~5 minutes after I returned and maybe that was not long enough (as your thread implies) becasue it reading way up on the stick. I let the car sit for about 1/2 hour and then checked it and it was close to the full level. The engine purrs with Mobil 1.

Thanks

True about the water -I find that any motor I switch from dino to syn oil just seem to run smoother. I had an Altima SE for 3 yrs and and never made the change but plan to keep this car and glad I made the move to syn.
