My buddy put this fluid in his wrx and he says it is static charged so it really clings to the parts inside. It takes 6 hours to completely drain it!

ANyone here about this? I think it costs $100 for 4 quarts.

 

I bet your buddy is talking about Motul Gear 300.

Whatever it is, it's definitely some kind of ester-based oil. Esters aren't "static charged", but they are polar so they have a natural affinity for metal. If you think 6 hours is a long time, that's nothing: that stuff actually NEVER fully comes off a metal surface unless it's burned off, abraded off, or chemically removed. That's part of the benefit: no matter how long your car sits, there will always be a film of oil on all the parts to reduce or eliminate cold start wear.

The Maxima transmission is a bit tricky though because the synchros won't engage properly if the fluid is too clingy and slippery. That's why you don't want something like Gear 300 for your transmission: it's much more of a gear oil, so it's optimized *****-out for gear protection and temperature control. The WRX can use it because its synchros are made to work with that kind of fluid, but for the Maxima you have to balance gear/bearing protection with synchro friendliness.

Fortunately, Redline MT-90 strikes that balance very well, and is made with ester basestocks (like all Redline products). Lots of Maxima guys use MT-90 and love it.

 

Nice... I guess its between the Redline MT-90 and some more Amsoil MTG.

Amsoil MTF GL4 wins...

 

When you say MTF, you mean manual transmission fluid in general, and not Amsoil's product called MTF, right? Amsoil's GL-4 oil is called MTG. Amsoil "MTF" is for other transmission types.

I'm not trying to be annoying, BTW. Just checking to be sure.



If you did indeed mean MTG, then good call.
