Best non Syn ATF?

Well, it's time do a little drain and fill on my tranny. Having no idea what the previous owner or last mechanic guy put in, I'd like to find a solid (if not the best: if there is such a thing) non syn ATF to to get a little consistency going on with my fluid. The folks that I have do all of my stuff use Dextron (any good?)

Honestly, I'd like to go synthetic, but I'm not so sure of the pitfalls of mixing the two (if there are any) and don't want to do a full flush, so I was thinking that I'd do drain and fills till I had all of the same product, then perhaps do a flush and move on to the synthetic once I felt somewhat confident that a flush wouldn't roast my tranny. Is there really a performance difference between Syn and non Syn?

I know there has been mention of dropping the pan and cleaning the magnets or doing it via the cooler line, but my mechanics have never done it that way, and I'm still somewhat confused as to what the difference between a T-Tech flush and a cooler line exchange is anyway. If you do the T-Tech flush (which is hooked up to the cooler line) how is it different from the Cooler line exchange? With the cooler line (from what I gather) it's 2 in and 2 out, but is the same amount of fluid being replaced regardless of the procedure? If it is, then won't both procedures be slightly risky due to all the new fluid (due to its cleaning properties)

Sorry for all the questions, but after reading the sticky's I'm still somewhat confused.

Side note: Car has 113k on it and have no idea about the history of the tranny service other than my last drain and fill. (and I don't know what type they put in)

Thanks for your inputs and insights.

Don't worry, do 3 drain and fills or the line disconnect method, just put in Mobil 1 synthetic or similar, or if you are feeling rich get D Matic, and your good, many on here; plus myself have done it with no problems.

Excellent: Amsoil Syn ought to do the trick too yes?

How many quarts do you reckon I should I bring to my drain and fill? 4-5?

Also curious: D Matic?

thank you btw

Matic-D is what Nissan himself (lol) recommends, thus only a nissan dealer (or infiniti) sells it. Thats what i have in the tranny right now and it shifts very crisp.

Any Dexron 3 is recommended for a 4th gen auto

If you dont plan on doing the work yourself then just get a drain and fill with any of the above fluid. You could get this done at the dealer for a very reasonable 80-90 dollars and tax or so using the Matic-D fluid, but whatever you do do NOT get a t-tech flush -- thats really bad for your tranny.

so there are basically 3 choices
A) drain and fill
B) drop the pan, clean the magnets and refill (replaces the same amount of fluid as "A")
C) Cooler return line, replaces almost all of the fluid

Side note (correct me if im wrong): the T-Tech flush is done by using this machine that basically pressurized the fluid inside the tranny by forcing the new fluid IN and thus forcing the old fluid OUT. This is not good beccause it blasts all sorts of metal debris into all the synchros and solenoids and gears and thus MAY cause damage to the tranny in one place or another. Others (like myself) report leaking tranny's (on my old car) after getting such a flush performed.

Besides, why would you ignore nissans own recommendation and dor this power flush ?!!!?

Curious again: What do you guys suppose the difference between the Matic-D and the Dexron III is? Is the Matic-D better in performance (and our tranny's will thank us more for putting it in instead) or is there really a difference?

How about the Matic-K? Do you guys think that a 4th Gen tranny could take that stuff and benefit from it even more? (over the Dex and D)

Matic- D is in the manual

many guys have ran dexron 3 and no issues. I've done it as well. Nothing diffrent nor crazy with it. Just do a couple of drain and refills w/e your basic dextron 3 or 4 and then go for the good syn stuff.
