I never thought I could get this much improvement with just oil. A few days ago I added Amsoil 75W-90 GL4 and Amsoil 0W-30 signature series motor oil that I purchased from Talkinghorse.. I filled up in Alexandria, Mn and drove to St Paul and filled up again just to see what the mileage was since the gas gauge hardly moved.. 144 miles on 3.97 gal. (35 mpg) with the 97 Max going 65-68 mph using Shell V power. Now I dont feel so dumb letting everyone pass me! Definitely worth the extra $$ that Amsoil costs. This may be a fluke but I doubt it.

what were you getting before from the same driving conditions?
As above, using the trip computer or actual calculations?
Next time run the tank down more before bothering with making threads. Saves time for both u and us...

The best I ever got with the same type of driving was a 294 mile trip from Sioux Falls and got 32 mpg. Well, my trip was done.. What was I supposed to do run the tank down and let a bunch of stop and go traffic deflate the mileage?

I know about the trip computers...I dont have a trip computer on the 97. I figured it out the old fashoned way. Miles traveled divided by gallons pumped.

Well - that SHOULD be an accurate reading....assuming the PUMP was accurate, AND that you know EXACTLY how much was left in your tank!!

Good onya m8! -- but I'd like to hear back from you after a full tank or two, to see what the average consumption rate is!!

35mpg with a stiff breeze to the backside, and going downhill!!
I don't think i EVER calculated what kind of EST MPG I got in my 98, because gas was still .99 per gallon then!!!

Best I've done in my 02, on the hwy, was 28mpg running 10w-30, and 93 octane gas!!
--but THAT is averaging 75-80mph in a 6spd on FLAT terrain, no stops--

I suppose given that you weren't breaking the 65mph mark, in a 3.0VQ, 35mpg IS attainable!!

I have an 02 SE and I get 35 + mpg if I keep it under 75mph I drive 35 miles to my job everyday and reset the computer to check my mpg's daily and.always get the same mpg's.If I run it at 80 mph I get 31 mpg !!! I have a 6 speed manual and its all stock except for a K&N air filter and a stillen rear swaybar.I use mobil1 full synthetic and a fram oil filter.I also use Z MAX engine oil treatment every other oil change and lucas fuel treatment every other gas fill up.I shift from 1st gear to 3rd then 5th gear to 6th gear.or 2nd gear to 4 th gear then to 6th gear.I run factory Bridgestone potenza's 225 50 17 on front tire 235 50 17 on the rear

Amsoil has great products, but unless the prior fills were way too high a viscosity I can't see any proper replacement oil giving 10% better mpg. There are many variables that play into mpg, run it more and evaluate over a longer period. Also keep in mind that seasonal gasoline formulation changes and ambient temperature changes affect mpg, aside from the obvious factor of how fast you drive down the highway. Add a tailwind vs headwind too.

Amsoil

To all those who are thinking of thinking of changing out ANY auto fluid to Amsoil, I can tell you all, you will never regret it. I have an '02 Chevy Tahoe, that averages 18 mpg in city driving (25 hwy) since changing out to Amsoil engine oil and tranny fluid several years ago. This weekend I plan on doing the same changeout to my '04 Maxima w/ the 5sp Auto. This will make the 5th car I have done this to, and my Kawasaki Concours, too. As far as the price of Amsoil, think of it this way. Off the shelf oils such as castrol, cost around $7/qt, and are changed out along w/ filter on the average 3-4000 miles. Amsoil online will cost you around $11/qt, about $2.50 less if you pay $20 to become a preferred customer. The recommended oil change is 15,000 miles! This on top of a cleaner, smoother running engine are soooo worth it! Another piece of good news is synthetic oils such as Amsoil, now blend well w/ pre-existing oil in your car...just drain, and fill w/ the new stuff. As a side, I once had a 1992 Ford Explorer. At 5000 miles, I changed out to Amsoil. As a test, I changed only the oil filter once a year, and kept it topped up til the car had 50,000 miles on it, then did a full change out. The old oil looked practically new, and the car continued to perform well til I sold it w/ over 200,000 miles on it.

I hear what you are saying, but email Amsoil...they will answer all your questions. I have heard the 5sp auto in the 6th gen Maxima is touchy, but I still plan on changing the tranny fluid out w/ Amsoil. With my history w/ Amsoil, I trust them explicitly.
I have a question for anyone out there. I have an '04 Max w/ the 5sp auto. At speeds between 45-55 there is a faint "howling" sound coming from the right front of the car, more noticeable if the sunroof is open. It goes away above 55mph. Anyone have any idea what this could be? The car has less than 45,000 miles on it.
