Which oil does your engine like?

I've found different engines like a certain oil the best. I recently switched over to Pennzoil Ultra and man, the engine runs super quiet with it. This is the most evident during cold starts in the morning. My gas mileage has also gone up slightly. I ran Castrol GTX before and it was also a good oil.

I either use Castrol or Valvoline, but sometimes Mobil 1 synethic if I could afford it. I used to use Penzoil for years, up til five years ago, I been using Valvoline, and occasionally add a quart of Lucas oil stablizer every other oil change.

mine loves mobil 1 and this is my first oil change with Pennzoil ultra. she loves it. and of course ALWAYS a K&N oil filter.

I really don't think that the manufacture is going to be the huge difference. Yea sure on some level I think it might, but I think the more important thing to look at is weight, and also a synthetic vs non. I work in the industry and talk oil with a ton of people daily (reps etc) they all agree that MOST top manufactures IE Mobil 1, Pensoil, Castrol etc 5w30 synthetic are within about 2% of each other for most tests. However they all concluded that depending on the type of engine, and how its HAS BEEN AND IS driven will depend of the life of the oil.


I personally run either Pensoil 5w30 full syth (cause its a good deal) or I run Liquidmoly 5w40 full syth cause I think having a heavier weight oil in a higher millage car is better. I do however change my oil every 3000km or less cause I work at a shop and get oil and filters hella cheap...


Before I worked at a shop I always found that Mobil 1 was good off the bat, but broke down really fast. I also like Red Line too, but found the same thing.

What do you mean by "broke down really fast"? And how did you find out?

I am using Mobil1. All the literature I have read about oils claims that synthetic oils are much more stable ( i.e., last longer) than non-synthetic oils.

The Pennzoil platinum has been proved to protect a VQ better, less wear and doesn't break down as fast.


their has been multiple claims of the Mobil 1 oil breaking down and becoming thinner over time, but i still ran it in all my vehicles last 5 years and NEVER had a issue, but after seeing the Pennzoil Platinum test i switched to Pennzoil ultra which is supposed to be much better then the platinum.

^The only true way of knowing how the M1 acted is through a UOA. M1 is very good stuff that provides top notch protection. I ran it nearly exclusively from 100-170K miles in my Accord. When the dealer pulled the valve cover to do a valve adjustment, they said the engine was spotless. I'll probably run M1 in the I35's next oil change.

I'm using penz plantinum.
Searched it on bob is the oil guy and it was good for this engine.
I'm at 3,000 mi right now I think I'll change it at 4,000?

You shouldn't have to change it that frequently.

I replace my Mobil 1 every 6,000-7,000 miles. A friend of mine uses regular (non-synthetic) Pennzoil in his Acura MDX and he only changes it every 12,000 miles! He knows what he is doing - he sent his oil for UOA analysis, and they told him his 12k frequency is fine (at least, for his driving pattern and conditions).

Yes I personally am saying Pens full syth is better than mobil1. I don't know what tests say and personally don't care. I know what my engine(s) past and present feel like with fresh oil, and what they feel like with broken down oil. And in my own personal experience I found that within 3000KM Mobil1 started to feel not so fresh. Where as with Pens I find that fresh feeling last a lot longer. I have read numerous test study's about oil and the additives they put in them etc. and why there oil is better than the next... really at the end of the day, as long as you actually change your oil and not let is slide, along with doing all the other regular maintenance, your oil is not going to make a HUGE difference. Yea on some micro scale what oil and filter you use over the life of your engine will probably make a difference, but what I am saying is most people own there car for 3-4 years and its used. Who knows how it was treated before, and all you can do it do you best from the point you get it. The damage is PROBABLY already done.

Again you change your oil when you think is best for you car... I personally would never let my oil go over 7000KM let alone Miles. I think that is way to long, and depending on how you drive your car, I bet that oil is weak as **** when it comes out. Like I said, I change my oil every 3000KM. I know I will never have a problem with my oil breaking down. YES it is mostly cause my car is on a hoist most weeks anyways.


Most reps I talk to claim there full syth is good for 10-12,000KM not MILES. And yes I am aware that BMW and MERC say oil changed every 15,000km or something crazy like that. Again it comes down to personal choice of doing what somebody says is ok and what you think is right. Just cause a manufacture says they RECOMMEND every xxxxxkm doesn't mean that what you should do.

VQ oil analysis on the M1 0W-40 was good and it even says GTR on the back of the bottle now. Walamrt carry's a 5qt jug for About $24-25 here. Pureone filter and you're set.

Wow. I don't understand myself how someone could run 12K miles between oil changes in a $10-$20-$30-$40K+ vehicle? I guarantee that vehicle has probably burned 1-1.5 litres by then and that oil will look like mud no matter how he drives. Oil changes are cheap preventative maintenance. That's just me though.

I've used Quaker State, Pennzoil and M1. All full syn and change every 5k km or less. I've never really noticed a significant difference honestly between them. They are all good oils.

^^i agree. I use napa oil which is bottled by valvoline. 10w30 and always use Lucas oil treatment and I might be old school... But I change mine every 3000 miles

Castrol edge syntecwith spy 0w-30 made in Germany best oil I ever used and runs super smooth. It decreases wear on the engine on cold start because its a 0weight. It has great reviews. 300,000 doesn't talk for itself

With a Quality oil like Amsoil the oil is still crystal clear @ 7000miles....This pennzoil ultra i put in 1000miles ago is BLACK as hell because of all the cleaning agents in it.

For the first few years, I ran various flavors of full-synth oils in my Maxima. Castrol Syntech, M1, whatever name-brand I could get on sale. I finally settled on Valvoline MaxLife several years ago. Reasonable price for a good oil. Either full-synth or the synth-blend. And always the factory-spec 5w30. I'm not a big fan of using weights outside the recommended ranges for no good reason.

Look in the manual it recommends more than 5w-30.

5w is recommended for all temperatures. If you live in warm climates they say you can use 10w. My car seems to like 5w best. No oil pressure light on start-up

I meant there are more options listed just like you stated thats all. That german made castrol 0W is good stuff if you do some reading but since the 0W-40 is so cheap at $25 a 5QT jug at walmart I enjoy using it and the other day I was at advanced auto and looked at the back of a 0w40 qt and it said GTR which it didn't before plus I read a oil analysis thread about this specific oil in a vq a little while back so I know everythings kosher. I now run this oil in everything from a '06 camry, '10 forester, and the max's. But the truth is as long as you change it frequently it doesn't matter what brand you use.

Amsoil for me as well.

I have been using Amsoil since 1980 on all my vehicles and have never replaced oil sooner than once a year with mileage ranging from 12,000 to 15,000 per year.

Had it on my 1972 Celica for 4 years till it was totaled, then on a 1986n Gram Am 2.5 till it was stolen and demolished, then 1990 Grand Prix for 4 years till it was broken into and it was written off. Then on a 1996 Pontiac Bonneville 3.8 SSEi for 7 years till it was written off after an accident. It had over 300,000 kms and I only replaced oil oce a year (used Amsoil Oil Filters as well)

Using 10W-30 Amsoil now on my 04 Maxima (Pour point for this grade is below -30'C) Has not failed to start up once this winter and we have had temps below -30'C for weeks on end this year.. I do plug it in when temp is supposed to go below -30'C. Plugged it in twice this year when it hit -38'C

I use Royal Purple 5w30 and a Royal Purple Oil Filter, but my VQ35 definitely burns it. Nothing wrong with the car, but I think maybe I shouldn't be using Royal Purple. I never see anybody on the forums saying that they use it. I'm wondering if I should switch to German Castrol 10w30??? Is it okay to use since it's a German oil and a 10w instead of the 5w?

For my cars, I quite like the SYN range of Penrite oils..In my previous skyline, i used it and i def noticed more responsiveness(I tried 3-5 different oils before over the years). In my I30 I have the 5w40 in.

I like to drop the old oil, run some cheap mineral with the old filter in for about say 5-10 min idle, then drop that oil and filter... then FINALLY put some oil that I want, eg penrite.

I personally find that with my above method, the oil stays clean for MUCH MUCH longer. I changed my oil about 3 weeks ago, and even now, the oil is very clean - Sure its gone darker, but its still very clean(I do about 500k's of driving per week too). I only do this say once every 3 oil changes.

Yes, I agree. The Castrol Ultra Titanium 0w20 does very well. My mileage increased to 32.9 mpg on the highway averaging 80 mph. Mileage appeared to be the best when rpms kept around 2000.. I am using the Valvoline GDI 0w20 and its not so impressive as mileage appears to be decreasing. Next I will try the Pennzoil Ultra as this along with Castrol sounds like the best. I have a 2021 Maxima SR, 14000 miles.
