Some garage modification...

EDIT: modified it a bit and painted it. Pics down farther in the thread!

Since now I need to stash the Yakima box in the garage, and I'm just getting too much stuff (more parts, more tools, etc etc) it was time to make some more storage....

Having a small car parked in one bay is nice for doing things like this middle shelf over the bay. It's 6'2" clearance, so i can walk under it without ducking, but can also reach up top to put things on/take things off.

I still need to paint it black to match the rest of the shelving, but it's too damn cold right now! Also need to relocate one of the ceiling lights since now it's just shining on the shelf...

I did hit my head on the extension cord reel hanging there. It did not feel nice. I will be relocating that.

Nice idea, I like it! Is there any way to attach it to the ceiling instead of having the posts? It looks like is bending already too. Maybe double up the 2x4's on the ends?

it's not bending, that's just because of the lens on the camera I used it looks that way. Odd. There's actually hardly any weight up there right now, and it's all on the ends, not the middle. It's built strong enough to hold about 400lbs up top based on my calculations (I used to build home additions and was a carpenter's assistant, so I'm pretty good with 2x4s ). It's solid, I do pull-ups off of it.

the big shelf over my workbench (the black one) is built to hold 1500lbs, since I wanted to store wheels, tires, and car parts on it.

Probably could have hung that end from the ceiling, but that would have required some structural reinforcement, and the legs are nice to have there as a rack for my work coats, brooms, dog leash, etc...

Regardless of calculations etc, I still would have used a 4x4 for the supporting posts. Calculations don't take accidents into account. You'll sleep much better at night too. I would have completed the 'frame' too, for added strength and aesthetic purposes.

Overall, very good job. I've been building extra storage space in my garage for the past 2 weeks myself. Fun stuff.

Also, is particle board just as strong (over time) as solid wood?? I just paid $14.35 at Home Depot for 19/32 for a 4x8 sheet of plywood with next to no knots. How much was your 4x8 particle board?

The Manufacturers claim that it is as strong or stronger than regular plywood. (I used to work at a lumber yard a few years ago) However if you talk to different general contractors they may tell you different depending on their experence, like asking what suspension is better or what tires on a max.

Nice set up there too BTW.

That sheet was $6.45. And since I have 2x2 crossmembers below it, it is plenty strong. I would have liked to use 4x4 posts, but they take up more space and I have limited width to work with. I eventually plan to cross-brace it against my other shelf with a upper beam, but that will just be for even more loft space, lol. Aesthetically I will do more work to it when I get a chance, including painting it all black like the other shelves.

Yup, I prefer plywood, but for the purpose I was using this for, I just wanted whatever was cheapest, honestly.

the max was sold 2 months ago.....the WRX sits in the driveway. Since my wife trucks the baby around in the 4Runner, she gets the other half of the garage.

btw, I do have a shed. That's where all the lawn stuff, spare GT6 parts, spare roofing and lumber, the engine hoist, ladders, etc go...

maybe I need a 2-car shed, lol...

Looks good!
What if you suspended the supports from above to have less obstruction on the floor, then stretch the shelf all the way across to the other side right through the other bay? Or would that interfere with the door tracks on the other side? Plus one on the tennis ball and the Westley's bleach white.

Actually, judging from all of your pics, it almost looks like you're not even allowed on the other side of the garage.

LOL just saw the tennis ball, I plan to do the same.

I like how everything is more less organized. I need to make shelves in my garage, but its freezing now and garage has no heat so it'll have to wait till spring. MAybee I'll wait till I built a bigger garage, I want to be able to put my truck inside.

The main problem with the other side is that the 4Runner is alot taller, wider, and longer than the little GT6 is, so there's not a whole lot of room for shelves. I do have full shelving down the opposite wall (smaller closet shelves) that hold other household stuff (nails/screws, paint, other stuff for house work. Will eventually get around to doing something nice on that side, but when the 4Runner is in there it's hard to get to anything on that side anyways...

+1 I installed a rear sway on the Subaru last weekend and it was damn cold out there in the garage. No heat for me either

Luckily workin on the subie is alot easier than the maxima and it took less than 10 minutes to do!
