255/40/17 on 17x8 ?????
That's the stock rear tire size for a Supra Turbo BTW.
However, it uses a 9.5 inch rim, so I'm thinking the tires will flare out a lot on the 8", which might lead to excessive tire wear due to the sidewalls pulling the tread of the tire down, so to speak. The middle of the tire will tend to wear faster, unless you run it at lower pressure, which will cause the sidewalls to have more stress as well.
Tires should be "square" with the rim.

As long as it doesn't rub w/ the strut it should be okay. Don't know why though. Unless you want curb protection for your wheels or you want more traction for drag races. Don't know if the performance would be better w/ 255s on a 8" rim.
My wheels are 40mm offset.
And, yes I just thought it looked good.
That's why I am asking the opinion of my fellow max drivers.
I am going to miss my 18s, and I just wanted the best looking/performing tire size on my new wheels.

Check out my comparison of my 235/45/17's with my 235/50/17's
HERE
I love the look...I like how it raises the car up slightly for the pothole roads and so I'm level with the trailer and bike hitch I use occasionally.
The only problem I run inis when the car is packed the rear passenger tire will touch the plastic wheel well if I hit a bump in the road. Driving with 2 passengers is fine.
also when I turn the wheel all the way, the edge of the tire is very close to touching the plastic wheel well but never does in the front.
if you can try out 255's first before putting any money into it.
good luck!

The tire would bulge out some but it can be done, now if you had a 8.5 or even 17x9 no arguements there it will look good actually Unclemax I believe has that set up you want with the 18x10 and the 255 or 265/40s. Looks darn good!!!

Actually I still have 245/45/17 in the back, I'll eventually move the 255's back and burn up the 245s and then replace those with 255's, then having all 4 tires 255.

Did you read my post on the first page?
235/45/17 will keep your tire as close to the stock size as possible.
I wanted to fill in the wheel well and raise my car a bit to drag a trailer around and a hitch mounted bike rack. So I got 235/50/17.
another thing that big tires do is record less miles on your max which doesn't really matter to me since I plan to keep mine for a long time...

Gentlemen, gentlemen. Your answers regarding rim width are all right here:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/dsutha...on%20chart.pdf
You'll need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to open the file. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download for free here:

And no, you cannot mount 255/40R17 tires on 8.0" wide rims and remain in spec.
