Tranny Cooler is installed

Sorry if the pic is too dark.

It took me about 2 hours to figure out where I was going to put the thing but I decided this was going to be the best place to mount it for me. I run the highway a lot and wanted it to get as much air possible. The best thing about doing this intall is that you really don't have to drain the tranny fluid to do this. I fluid that was lying in the hose itself which was not much even in small amounts.

Well at least I thought of it from a working standpoint and not to make people thing I really had a mini-intercooler connected to my imaginary turbo setup.

Deezo, did you need special fittings?

I ordered the B & M Supercooler, Polished and I need to use NPT fittings to connect it(did not know this prior to ordering). The cooler has two female 1/2 threaded inlets so I need to purchase a 1/2 inch NPT with a barb on the end.

Did you have to do anything special to install or was it just additional transmission hose and clamps?

If you needed add'l hose, how much and what size did you need?

Thanks MAN...

Give me your email and address through PM and I will send you the fittings you need. I ordered the same one you have but I sent it back to get this one. I really have no use for the fittings. I used plastic tie straps to lock it in place and used the hose clamps that cmae with the kit. I bought extra hose (about 4') and I'm glad I did because the hose that comes with the kit is kind of stiff and you wouldn't be able to position the hose correctly without getting kinks in it, especially if you put it where I put mine. I figured I'd give the fluid less distance to travel also.

Don't get 1/2 inch hose because its too big. When I send you the fittings you'll be able to get the right hose size.

Bags: Thanks. You'd better do it because you're hard on your auto too.

max_speed97: I personally think the B&M is better because it has a built in bypass for the winter months to keep the tranny fluid at the right operating temperature.

I like the way it looks and I can't feel any difference in the way it shift. I do feel better about having it though.

Automatic Transmission Cooler Install

Plate & Fin Type (Best):

B&M (Have internal bypass for cold climates)
-Supercooler #70255
16,000 GVW 11 x 5.75 x 0.75" $44
-Supercooler Type #70264
19,000 GVW 11 x 7.5 x 0.75" $40

Hayden:
-Rapid-Cool #676
11 x 5.875 x 0.75" $46
-Rapid-Cool #677
11 x 7.5 x 0.75" $49

Tube & Fin Type (Good):

Hayden:
-Ultra-Cool #403
12.75 x 7.5 x 0.75" $40

May need 4 feet of 3/8" transmission fluid hose:
Gates Transmission Fluid (aka Power Steering) Hose (available at O'Reillys)
$2 to $3/foot

O'Reilly's, AutoZone, and Pep Boys carry Hayden coolers

NOTE: All coolers above will do just fine. However, the bigger-dimensioned models can be more susceptible to poorer tranny shifts for those that have harsh winter climates. It would be wise to choose according to your climate.

Quoted Message:

Courtesy of Matt93SEE

The 16,000 will still be more than enough for our cars no matter whether you live in Alaska or the Sahara. They're rated at 16,000lb because they're designed to cool the fluid enough for a 16,000lb vehicle. NOT a Maxima with a 4500lb absolute max capacity.. (3200lb car + 1300 people & luggage)

IMO, anything over 12,000 is overkill, especially in places where it drops below 40 for any point int he winter. my car got steadily more and more sluggish in the winter and only began shifting correctly when the temp got back above 60. It wasn't my driving that caused my tranny to be about 2 weeks from failure, it was the damn oversized tranny cooler.

For those that add ANY tranny cooler, I highly recommend covering at least half of it with plastic or cardboard during the winter (you see it done on trucks and busses and stuff like that for the exact same reason).

What ATF Fluid should I use?:

Synthetic should be used as a fluid replacement for its longevity and superior flash point properties. Available brands include the following:

Mobile 1 ATF (Readily available at all Auto Zone stores)
Amsoil ATF (Available at specialty dealers or at www.amsoil.com)

Additional NOTE:

Quoted Message:

Courtesy of brubenstein:

It's really important to switch over to synthetic ATF if you use a trans cooler in cold climates. It won't get as thick as conventional ATF, so the transmission will work properly even with cold fluid. It still won't shift into OD until the fluid temp reaches 122F. Another reasonable thing to do is put the cooler in the feed line from the transmission to the radiator, instead of the return line. This allows the heat exchanger in the radiator to warm up the fluid. You could even swap the lines at the transmission in spring and fall if you want.

I would not use synthetic ATF that is marked for "racing". Its viscosity is a little higher, and will only increase cold weather problems. With the B&M 70255 cooler and Mobil 1 ATF, my transmission acted fine into the 30's.

How do I install a transmission cooler?

Only thing I disagree with deez about is you really don't need anything greater than the B&M 70255, ESPECIALLY with synthetic ATF.

B&M Supercooler is a cut above the Hayden Rapid-Cool and both are LIGHT YEARS ahead of the tube and fin Hayden Ultra-Cool 403 or 404 models. What's funny is all are around $40 to $50.....

Buying 4 to 6 feet of good quality (Gates) transmission fluid (aka power steering) hose is essential as well. On the cooler I have installed, I didn't bother with the hose in the kit.

You're right about it being more than enough but it should be fine. Jime and a few others recommended 70264. Jime actually has this cooler as his only means of cooling his fluid. I know as of now (Summer), it shifts no different. I am curious to see how well the bypass works when its about 20 degrees out.

Yeah, me too. Drop us a line when it gets that cold. I'm curious to see how well the B&M performs. brubenstein is the only one I know of who has used a B&M cooler and synthetic ATF in cold conditions with no probs.

I have the B&M 70255. Great cooler, solid construction. B&M advertises that this cooler is nearly indestructible. I believe them...there are no thin aluminum fins to bend, and based on how hot it gets it seems to work quite well.

I have not had any problems in cold weather with this cooler, but then I use Redline D4 ATF.

Sorry Eric, I thought you had a Hayden plate and fin. And we just had this conversation about a week or so ago.
