Today because of the extreme heat after being parked, one piece of my factory wood dash delaminated. I could not believe what it was like when I peeled the plastic off. This stuff was a $429 option when new.

Imagine taking a cardboard backing from a pad of paper. Then peel a cucumber. Take those shavings and glue them to the cardboard. Now take a piece of clear plastc, about 6-10 times as think as the cucumber peels, and lay that over the peels. I kid you not, that's how much wood is in the "wood." It's thinner than a birch tree's bark. I'm not kidding, I didn't know it was really that cheap. And this stuff is even over $200 on the web. Ugh it looks bad, but I don't want to buy an entire kit when I know what junk it is!! Live and learn, so many fads come and go with these cars.

That is why you dont get that as an option when buying a car. You can get real wood for $400 on the net or you could get the same stuff they use for no more then $150-200. But who cares if it's real wood or not, you couldn't tell as almost everyone else wouldn't.

My 87 Max SE had a leather-rim steering wheel. Or not. It started to peel - luckily while under warranty - and the leather looked no thicker than an onion skin glued over cloth padding. You could almost see thru this leather. Must've been tanned catfish hides.

The replacement wheel didn't peel, but after a decade it was pretty crackly.

And recall the suede scandal of the 280ZX (anniversary edition??) in the early 80's.. wasn't suede and owners were finally given reparations.

No, Nissan is not without a few blems.

This thread just proved something to me. Ignorance is bliss. Glad mine has the basic black plastic that I already know what it is.

While I'm at it I might as well trick myself into believing that I have Connolly leather too, instead of the Nissan seat covers which are too stiff and brittle even for use for softball gloves!

The funny thing is in my house there's a serious wood theme due to the previous owners, all hardwood floors, solid oak kitchen cabinets, even down to the heat/a/c vent on the dining room floor--wood that matches the floor. Yet the Nissa is pulp glued to cardboard.

Eventually I think I'm gonna have to buy the kit--I can't leave the piece the way it is. It looks like a piece of cardboard is stuck on my dash. And the center vents are experiencing the same discoloration etc, so it will delaminate too. Looks awful!

What's the deal with wood in a car anyway's? I could understand if it were the flinstones car, I mean take two logs and stick some rock wheels on there then you and your friend Barry and go running along.
