Y-pipe install from hell
Y-pipe install from hell
Yesterday me, my brother and my friend tried to install the Y-pipe.
I was able to remove all the nut except for one on the rear flange.
The 2 nuts on the cat came off easily with the help of a breaker bar.
Anyway, the last nut remaining on the rear flange got stripped. I used a 12" extension and a Universal Joint, but the bend was still severe.. I ended up stripping the nut.
So I put all the nuts back on and aborted the project.
If I take it to a shop, will they be able to take the nut off? I heard they can "torch" it off, but what do you all mean by that?
Also, those of you who have installed the Y-pipe yourself, did you have to use an Universal Joint, or just the 12" extension?
I think that if I had NOT used the U-joint, the nut might have not stripped. Even without the U-joint, the angle with just the extension is not too bad. But the u-joint prevents the force from properly turning the nut. Instead, the force is distrubuted in a linear direction, rather than the "rotational" direction that is needed to turn the nut. That's what I think.
What should I do?
I need some help guys...

Re: Y-pipe install from hell
Sounds like my weekend, except I got the job done. The manifold nuts all broke loose with no problem. The ones on the cat added about 3 hours to the project. I rounded the first one off with a 6 point socket (WD-40, no torch). For a while I thought about retightening everything and taking it to a shop. I held a propane torch on the other nut for about 5 minutes, and it broke free with no problem. I attacked the F'd up nut with every implement of destruction in my limited arsenal, and it finally came off. I wound up cutting away as much of it as I could with a cut off wheel on a Dremmel, then splitting it with a chisel. The install is a snap. So far, leaks and no buzzing.
