Custom Intake

what it is..
Ok, I gotta start doing performance mod's to the max. I wanna start with the intake. Now, I've seen things on the internet before and maybe even on here, but I can't find anything now. I used the search here but didn't turn up anything. Does anyone have instructions or advise on a custom intake? I'm not looking to make it a huge **** pipe that raps around the engine 5 times but just something to help out the hamster in there! I can tell that it won't be terribly difficult, but doing it correctly is important right!?!?

BTW: if anyone has pic's of a custom intake that would be cool too :

I made it myself... $40 total :-). I might get a better cone filter down the road, but for now, it's all good.

Here's instructions:

I sanded the metal, and used red engine enamel and engine clear coat. I probably should have primed it, but the intake doesn't get too hot. No problems so far, but it's only been a week.

What exactly do those hoses that are hooked up to the red mid-pipe do?

The front one is the crankcase breather (this can be replaced with a little filter on the valve cover). The rear one is the IAC, this must remain in place. The little tiny barb is an EGR system vent (this one can just be left dangling if you want).

So it's not that complicated to do yourself!

Thanks for the info.

Wow! better than the idea that I had The intake and sensor locations look different on a 5th gen, but I'm going to try it tomorrow as soon as I figure out where to buy a cone filter. Where did you buy yours? If I can't find one for a Maxima, what is the diameter of the filter where its connected to the MAF/tube?

The BrianV Cone Intake mod uses a metal piece inside the stock upper airbox piece to hook a generic 3" Cone Filter to the MAF. I got mine at AutoZone for $20 off the 'riceboy' rack behind the counter .

My conversation was something like:
*looks around for other people, sees none*
Me: "Can I, um, have one of those *cough* Cone Filters *cough*"
Clerk: "What color?"
Me: *shamefully* "The red one"

I left my sensors wire-tied inside the engine bay. Just a temp sensor from inside the stock 'snorkle'. I'm not sure about 5th gens... someone in the 5th gen forum must have posted some tips.

I had a hard time cutting the mid-pipe so I just didn't do it. I did buy a rubber 3" coupler to replace the ribbed pipe from the mid-pipe going into the throttle body (Back pipe?). Mainly I wanted to smooth out the sound. I removed my stock intake, very simple! The hardest part was the remove the little gold ring. Once that was done, I used another rubber 3" coupler and attatched it to the ring. I used a K&N cone filter (model EL-0930)on the end of that pipe. It filter wouldn't fit inside the engine bay so I had to cut the coupler. I bolted the gold ring onto the tube with the MAF sensor. The friggen couple couldn't hold the weight!!! I took out the 3" couple and just attatched the K&N to the ring. It was a VERY hard job because it was a snug fit, but it seemed to did the trick and stayed in place. I used the ring that came with it to tighten it up some more. I then used black zip ties to hold it in position. All was fine and I turned on the engine. Started like normal, very hissy.

My thoughts on it: It looks VERY high quality, especially since it only cost my $7 to buy the couplers. It looks professional because I didn't bend the gold ring, therefore no duct tape was used. Since you can buy a Generic cone filter for about $20, it will cost you less than $30. Doesn't sound restricted because it hisses and psss alot. Step on the gas and it's just a louder mechanical noise, not alot of rumble, and slightly deeper compared to stock. Compared to my back-pipe/no filter holder/K&N filter combo, its a very high pitch, but it doesn't feel restricted below 2,500rpms. It doesn't have the loud growl/hum/roar of that combo. Acceleration wise, the back-pipe/no filter holder/K&N filter combo gives you the perception that its alot faster because of its growl/hum at mid/high rpms compared to the hiss/psss/mechanical noise.

Whats the difference between the Jim Wolf Pop Charger Vs. K&N Cone Filter? Don't both just buy you a filter or does the Pop Charger come with a special pipe to make it have the claimed "V8" sound?

I would recommend both for anyone who's on a budget. Its louder and deeper sounding than stock. The back-pipe/no filter holder/K&N filter combo sounds meaner though. I can't imaging what yours sounds like though with that unrestricted mid-pipe. Must be loud

All in all, I returned all the parts (K&N cone,1 3" coupler)except for the other 3" coupler running into the throttle body. That peice does make a difference in sound. It sounds smoother and less restrained. I just like the sound on the other combo better.

Great idea and WAY better excecuted than the setup I have in my car right now WAY cheaper than name brand and it looks the same. GOOD JOB!

would that intake 'work' or 'fit' a 2001 Maxima? Or is it just 4th generations.

Hey bro...I think I have an extra intake in my garage that I would sell you fairly cheap. I just gotta clean off the plastic around the filter because I painted it. But the hardest thing to find is the metal adapter- Which I have.

E-mail me if you are interested. It will definitely fit a 2K1 and it's never been used.

Just a bit of advice if you use these instructions. If you can find a 3 1/4" pipe, the fitting will be much better than using the 3" pipe. I use the 3" and feel that the pipe would fit better if it were a little bit bigger, Any one what did this agree?

The 3" rubber couplings I used wasn't a hard fit for the 5th gen. In fact, it was a perfect fit. It might be different for 4th gens though.

Cool. Thanks for the instructions. This is basically a $40 Frankencar intake right? I'll try mine this week.

I havent had any problems with mine, but the fit isn't as good as I wouls like. But, if it ain't broke , don't fix it.

Call Place Racing tell them you have an intake and its getting chromed and you don't want to be without. Ask them for just the MAF adapter(they sold me 1 for $20.00) and then go to any automotive/performance shop that sells filters(you can find them online for 15-20) and purchase a filter w/ a 3in opening. The bolts from the stock air box that connect the MAF are a perfect fit for the place racing MAF adapter. Remove stock crap and replace w/ intake for under or around $40.00. Any questions. PM me
