Finally fixed the hesitation problem on my 99 SE 5spd!
I replaced one bad coil and now the car is silky smooth. How did I know which coil I needed to replace you ask, well I had a misfire error code tell me which cylinder it was.
I am a happy man!
By the way, I have two extra new coils that are for the back bank of cylinder for sale in the sales forum if anyone is interested.
Would anyone know if budget makes a y-pipe for a cali spec 99?
Thanks.

Did the car throw any codes when the coil was bad? Any other indications of a bad coil?

Eric,
Another indication of a bad coil is lack of power in the 3k-4.5k rpm range. Sometimes I could feel the knock sensor actually doing its thing by retarding the timing. I could feel the car loose power all of the sudden when my rpm hit the above danger range. This is the range where most of the pinging occured on my max before I started using 93 Mobile gas by the way.
Peace.

It happened to me several months ago on my way home while accelerating on the freeway ('99 SEL 5sp). There was no sound, just a quick hesitation and CEL, so I slowed it down and it drove just fine the rest of the way home and the next day when I drove to the dealer (I drove *very* lightly, kept it under 2500RPM). They said "Misfire in 2 cylinders due to 2 bad coils" and replaced all 6 under warranty.
