Steering Gear Problem On '87 Maxima

Hi,

The boots that cover the point at which the inner tie rods seat into the stearing gear (rack & pinion) have been cracked for some time and I'm sure that dirt has contaminated this area. How can I tell if the gear is damaged or just the tie rods or both? Also, does the aftermarket rebuilt steering gears come with tire rods and boots or is this bought separately? Does anyone have any personal experience with replacing this component?

I'd leave this alone except that I am experiencing some difficulty with steering when car is cold and at low speed. Also, there is front end shimmy at about 65mph. I was thinking that this could be due to worn inner tie rods.

TIA,

Steve
