Hi my name's Eric, and I'm a modoholic
When it's all said and done, I've spent well over $7000 in modifications for my car for the past 4 years. I'm including multiple sets of wheels and tires, 2 y-pipes, 2 b-pipes, 3 sets of springs, etc. I'm also subtracting money I made back when I sold certain items. I'm also including $300 in track time, $200 in dyno time, $400 various gaskets, dust boots, bearings, and $200 in alignments.
The most IMPORTANT thing I've learned.....USE QUALITY PARTS!!!!! You get what you pay for. Believe me. I've could have saved myself probably $2000 if I would have spent more money upfront and got the high quality part I orginally wanted instead of settling for the lower quality aftermarket part. For my next car (possibly a 2002 GTI) I'm going to use only the highest quality parts and do it right the first time.
With that said, the car has been bulletproof and the only money I spend on it is for gas and mods. Some people spend thousands a year fixing their car. I spend $2000 a year modifiying my car.
