Nissans = bad gas mileage all around

* Nissan's most popular cars and trucks are consistently among the least fuel-efficient vehicles in many size classes

That was taken from an article on yahoo.com . Its inthe news part right now about econimicly good cars or something.

I consider that a good thing. It takes gas to make power.

Is this compared to other 6 cylinders? Or are they grouping it in with cars in general including 4 bangers?

25? Hahaha, are you crazy, I had a 4.6L V8 in a 3900lb T-bird that got exactly the same milage as my 3L Max. The Max gobbles up fuel and costs even more cause we run premium. I'm not complaining, but the mileage sucks considerably.

Please explain how premium fuel makes a car have less mpg than using mid or low grade fuel. Thanks

Yeah I don't think I've ever hit the EPA mileage ratings, even while lightfooting it.

Thats not what he said. Releasedtruth stated that Nissan recommends we use Premium which costs more then regural hance we pay more for our fuel.

On a side note, I get around 25 MPH combined highway/city and almost 30 on trips. I think thats pretty good from a V6 sedan.

I thought we used premium in the Max because it was to prevent knocking, not to get better mileage, or do they go hand in hand?

The premium unleaded takes advantage of the high compression ratio of the engine (10:1). So yes, it is to prevent knock. But your Maxima can run regular as well without any damage to the engine. The ECU is smart enough to compensate for regular. You might lose a few horsepower though, but probably not enough to be noticeable. However, some other car companies are getting clever and building high performance high compression engines which do not require premium. Examples: Honda Accord V6 and Cadillac's Northstar V8's.

I too get 25mpg combined and 30mpg on the highway alone. I've never had any problems getting respectable mpg out my my deeply geared (3.80 gear) 5 speed 96 SE.

People need to realize that short drives and lots of starts with a cold engine will kill your mpgs. If you do a lot of stop and go driving, you will have worse gas mileage. It takes considerably more fuel to get a car up to speed than keep a car at speed. On a cold 40-degree and below day with a cold motor, it is not rare to burn 0.5-1.0 gallons (ie 1-2 miles per gallon!!!) of gas in the first 2-3 minutes of warm up. Those of you that prefer to let your cold engines warm by idling for extended periods (2+ minutes) will see a major loss in mpg also. Cold engines run rich.

An excellent example of how quickly a cold engine will consume fuel vs one that's warm is when I've changed my fuel filter (4 times now). The two times I changed my fuel filter with a warm engine it takes my car ~1 minute to consume the fuel in the lines and die (after the fuel pump fuse was pulled). On a stone cold engine, it takes my car all of 10 seconds to consume the fuel in the lines and die.

Well the orignal posts mentioned "by class" so I guess it would be like this Maximas vs Camrys, Accords etc...

Problem is you can get Camrys in 4 cylinder versions that get much better mileage. If you ave all the 4 and 6 cyl Camry's mileage and the compare it to all the maxima's mileage(all V6 and now all 3.5 liter V6), of course it's gonna look worse.

i had a 94 t-bird 3.8 v6 and got around the same mpg as my 3.5, how can the 4.6 be more efficient?

i have auto btw...my gas mileage seeems ok to me

also, my bro's gf has a 99 3.0 CL...looks like same engine for 98-02 v6 accords...she doesn't even make it to 300 on a full tank, but i'm not sure what the gas tank size is

It's not that it has less mpg because of the premium, just that a tank costs us more than running the cheaper 87 in other cars.

My 94 4.6 never once got less than 20 mpg total per tank, even on all city driving. That motor didn't push huge power, but it ran low rpms and cruised mighty smooth. I got about 26.5 on my trip to Vegas last year. Oh, and it was soooo much more quiet than my "luxury" sedan Maxima.... That 5000 dollar Ford held up damn well, I'll never knock the Birds

you will get lower mpg using something less then 92+ octane fuel. on top of the performance decrease, knock sensor retarding your timing and whatever other damage may be happening.

I have hit 27-28 mpg ONCE.. pure highway, cruise control etc..

I consistently get 16-18 mpg in the city and around 22-24 highway.

I think it varies just what kind of "city" driving you do...

What some people consider "city", I consider highway by NYC standards due to all the traffic and abundance of red lights..

as far as other cars....

I think it's kind of true.. The Pathfinder isn't very fuel efficient in comparison to other SUVs, same goes for other cars.. The 4 banger altima is not as fuel efficient as the 4 cyl camry or accord.. The Sentra gets less than the Civic and the Corolla.. etc..

It's isn't right. The V6 version has a 3.0L that delivers 192 hp. I test drove one when I was shopping for (and decided on the 2K2 Max). It felt weak compared to the Maxima.

My mom's 96 Camry V6 w/a 3.0L 188 hp V6 also feels pretty weak compared to the Max.

The gas mileage I'm getting on my Maxima is about what I expect... worst was 14 mpg (when I took my car lapping at a track) and best I've had is 28. I typically get 17-21 mpg w/mostly city driving and lots of short trips. :| It's slightly better than what I got on my old 91 Camry V6 (2.5L V6 156 hp), so I'm reasonably happy considering I get slightly better mileage AND 99 hp more.

I can't see why anyone would base it on the gauge pointing at E or not. You should ALWAYS calculate it by miles traveled divided by gas used for that distance. Every car I've driven has had a gas gauge that's conservative (probably so that you don't run yourself out of gas).

Compare the maxima to an electric car... You know why those get good gas milege??? cause they are slow as $hit. The Max needs its "Food" for the power, other sedans get better milege cause they have less powerful engines. But gas milege is a sacrifice for power, I say its worth paying some xtra cash for having a fast sedan. Sure, civics get better milege, but we all know the power of a civic

The manual only says that "there should be a small reserve of fuel in the tank when the fuel gauge needle reaches"E."" I'll bet there's like 3 gallons still in there then. That'd really screw up mileage calculations.
The light turns on in my 2k1 Max with like 3 gallons left in the tank, so the light means nothing. And for reference, I do ALL city driving and get an average of about 17mpg. I'm not easy on the gas though either.

At what speed do you get optimum mileage. My Dad insists that it is 55mph. Anyone know?

i'd say around 70

the automatic is actually a tad more fuel efficient than the 5 speed at highway speeds...

i dunno because the fast you go the more wind resistence there is which decreases your efficiency, my physics professor said that you'd burn more fuel going 70 mph than 30 mph .. i'd say 55 is pretty accurate
