Making own short throw shifter- maybe STS for 2002s?

A friend gave me this idea when he did this to his old Camry- which does not have short throw. Toyotas use cable driven shifters like the new 02s do so maybe this is applicable to the 2002s but I dont know. Anyway I notice some people complain about the notchiness and rifle bolt action of the STS's and the increased vibration because of the polyurethane bushings. Also because that the pacesetter unit pushes the unit far forwards. What my friend did, was to cut the stock shifter into 3 pieces. With varying lengths.

I made a quick ascii rendition of what I'm talking about. D is the shift ****/threaded section. O is the pivot point and L is the part that links to the shifter rod. The cut for the section between O and the top cut will be longer then the cut for the cut for the bottom. Then, flip the middle section upside down and use a welder to reweld the metal back together. This will reduce the height of the shifter as well as reduce the "throws". Care will have to be taken to find out what the optimal cutting distances are. This should however keep any vibrations the same as before. This will also save money, especially if you have a friend or you are a welder.

Disclaimer- this is only my idea and I have not looked at it in depth yet, nor have I tried it. If you try this you are in uncharted water.

For the 2k2's I wonder if the shifter out of the 350z would fit directly or not. I mean that thing is pretty low as is. Just a thought.

The 2002 shifer has a lift up mechanism unlike the Z and the toyota. Chopping the shifer to make it shorter is probably not possible becuase of this.
