No traction in 1st gear under heavy acceleration lately

Hey,

I've noticed that my car doesn't have the traction it used to have under heavy acceleration anymore. Before I couln't even brake the tires loose in 1st gear from a roll. But now, it happens every time I get on it in 1st gear. Plus, I've gotten a lot more wheel hop lately. My tires are still in good condition, but I don't know if they're going to last much longer under these conditions . I really didn't change much in the car to justify the loss of traction. I did remove the maxspeed springs and left the GR2s in there. My camber should be back to spec now that the car isn't lowered. So more than likely that's not the problem. Maybe it's the cold weather here in NJ.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks.

you could be getting less traction because of all the sand and salt that's on the roads.

You know what, I never thought of that. But all that rain we had this past weekend should have washed most of that away.

Peace.

When it's really cold out, traction tends to suffer.. not to mention cold air = better performance out of your engine.

I have the same problem in my 2k2, like it has been said before, it's most likely a mixture of the leftover salt on the roads and alot of power down to the wheel, gotta love the MAX.

Like stated earlier, the cold hurts traction and helps performance. In this 10 degreee weather in Chicago I can break the tires loose big time on my 1-2 shift.
Also my wheel hop seems to be much worse with really cold temps. I have a thread in the 1/4 forum concerning that.

the cold weather makes the ground cold... Traction = Friction = HEAT. None on the ground.

now wouldnt there be less friction if there was more traction?

Cold makes the rubber harder, less traction. All season tires have compounds that work to lower temps than summer tires, but there's still a difference. Also, as tires age the rubber tends to harden - tread depth can be fine but the rubber can be dead.

Hey all,

Just killed two birds w/one stone The problem was in my front sway bar. When I did my suspension I left the front sway bar disconnected to get more oversteer. Well, I found out that that's what caused me to have less traction and made the ride harsher/gave me a lot of bump steer. Now that I tightened it, it's a whole different ball game. I've got the idea of the disconnected FSB in the autox forum. It seemed to make the car more neutral in hard turns, but not enought to justify the added body lean, bumpsteer, less traction, more harshness. So now I have my traction back. Before, when I went into a turn and got on it I would spin my inside tire, which never happened before I messed w/the FSB. I'm a happy camper I guess everything has a reason for being the way it is huh?

Thanks for all the input fellas.

I have always had problems with traction in my '95 GXE 5spd. From a roll or a stop. I can get up to about 3,500 in first(rolling) then stomp it and I will get a good amount of wheel spin and a nice scratch in second gear. Car is stock and is still a good runner.

I think the 95's have the most power and are the lightest. Enjoy your ride .

Peace.

yeah... mine was doing the same... but only really happens on super cold days...

which leads to less traction...

I have major traction issues with my 2k2 here in CT. between the coldness and all the sand and salt on the roads, my tires light up all the time. i hate doin it too... worst one was a week or so ago when i had to make a turn and this idiot almost sideswiped me - to avoide i floored it, only to have both the front tires smoke for about 20 feet as i turned... waste of rubber. I WANT SUMMER!

Get new summer-rated tires and you'll barely spin them.
